Are you asking English or Americans people how the Portuguese are ? How would they know ? If they do they will give you a stereotyped point of view.... like French eat garlic and don't shave...etc.
I don't know Portugal but I would like to go there, because I know it is a lovely and peaceful country, with nice religious (Cristian) people, excellent food, good climate and the ocean, and it is not too expensive. You should go there and see for yourself.
You can also write a polite letter to the Portuguese Embassy (or go to the Embassy for an appointment to get information as a student, and ask everything you want to know. They will be very willing to help you with a warm welcome.
Portuguese, Italians and French people are like that.
We are Latin after all.
Bien amicalement.

There use to be a lot in Artesia, CA but I think most have moved out. The Indians have taken over the identity of that city. It's called "Little India." Good Luck!
