I was having a chat with my friend in R.E today about equality and all that and now I'm confused.

We have all heard of prejudice and discrimination and the main issues we think of are racism and sexism where blacks and whites are so racist to each other and act nastily and where men and women are looked on as different.

But there are other forms of P+D right? Where people are viewed and treated differerntly becuase of their age, mental or physical disability, source of income and more things like this.

What I want to know is how are people treated differently in these situations? I kind of want some examples of where people are discriminating towards age, disability etc because I cant think of any circumstances or examples where these issues are issues of prejudice + discrimination.

Please help me.

You know India is demacratic system with too many religions and sub religions, castes and so on. It is also set of states on longuage basis, who keep disputing for geographical borders, resources like water, electricity, and so on. The election system is rotton, in the sense, spend crores in elections and earn after a win. Power Play is predominent with all political parties. You know the voting percentage is about 50% and winning candidate may actual get 20% of votes only to rule 100 % of population. Because of political backing basic problems like population explosion is not takled properly among all religions, which is contirbuting to poverty, illeteracy and other related problems. Problems like hartal, bandh, stone throwing, killing innocent common people in explosions, etc are fully encouraged by political parties, when they are not having power both at district, state and central levels.

Under such situation how we can think of unity among Indians to fight for the right way ?

This week I've seen someone think North Americans Obsess over the Death of Anna Nicole Smith. I've seen another who seems convinced North America has stolen Iraqi oil despite the steeply rising gasoline and oil prices. I even saw a guy who asked if George Bush was going to be tried as a war criminal after his presidency.

Where do you guys get this stuff? Are some of you people really all that ignorant to think that the programs we put on TV have a 100% face value? I'm glad we know our news shows reflect heavy opinions, because I think the rest of the world does not realize that. I would love to know how many of you people who make these really general associations, have atleast one North American friend? How many have been here before and actually talked to an American?

Before you people ask another ignorant question, I ask you take some time and try google. For example, before you accuse North Americans of stealing Iraqi oil, why not try to find the numbers that prove it?

I am african-american so don't take this the wrong way. Do you think there is a double standard with black organization, schools, etc. I mean, think about it, there are black television shows, black schools, black organizations, and all sorts of other things. But if people were to make white schools, or white television shows, we'd think of it as segregation. I think that this is a great double standard and though I see nothing wrong with it I think people use the fact of slavery and that African-Americans were treated differently in the past to support this. Any thoughts?

We only talk about sexualized images in the media and how they effect young girls. Well, there are some pretty sexualized images of men in the media as well; ripped muscles, no shirts, underwear models, the whole "Pimp" image. Why don;t we ever talk about how these images impact young boys and young men?

If your friend accidentally said a racial slur (pretend your friend is not of the race/ethnicity/sexual orientation, etc... that the slur belongs), would you see that as a sign of "hidden" racism on their part? What if it was under legitimate means (For example: Trying to distinguish the word from the little known, non-racist, word "*********," which means ungenerous/miserly)? And what if it wasn't under (what you would deem) as legitimate means?

What if, instead of a friend, it was a general acquaintance? Would your view of them be different than had it been a friend?

What hav people got against chavs? Its not as if they r doin any harm 2 any one by the way the talk and dress!? Everyone has their own sense of style and if they wanna dress like they do let em, i think its a pretty good look actually, u get people complaining about them all the time, they aint the only anti social people in the world, just cause some one decides to wear a hoodie dont mean their gona go out an rob someone! And wot bout all the other people who like 2 dress like theyve jus been 2 a funeral? Or the people that like 2 look like they havent washed in days? Just leave em alone.
