This question has made me think and you are right. Most people see discrimination in terms of mainly race or gender, but there is a lot of age discrimination. There was a recent article in a UK paper where a man of 64 has applied for over 100 jobs, he wants to work, has a lot of varied experience and qualifications, but has not been employed. He thinks his age is the factor. There was a survey done about 2 years ago and age discrimination is also being done to younger workers as well as older ones, because they have potential, but lack of experience doesn't help them. The way people look too is a factor and if an employer has to choose between a plump, but highly experienced person and a slim, attractive, but less experienced candidate, they will mainly choose the more attractive one.

Age discrimination happens all the time in the workforce. In the US it is illegal to ask an applicant his/her age, but one can get a rough estimate by looking at the person. For example, if a 50-year-old man and a 25-year-old man interview for the same position, the younger will most likely get the job because they are more likely to stay with the company longer and won't have as many health issues. I condiser this "veiled" discrimination.

me and my husband get a lot of age discrimination because we look like teenagers but i am 24 and he is 23, a couple of weeks ago my husband went to a furniture store to buy a dining room table, they were the only store who had this particular table, well my husband went inside and about 4 sales people just looked at him and passed right by him, he called me on my cell phone really pissed (i was meeting him there) i came in to see him and we were still waiting for somebody to help us! (the store was NOT busy) finally a saleman came up and asked us if we needed help and we told him we've been waiting for somebody for like 20 minutes, he apologized but the thing is he was one of those sales people who ignored us! another time we went to a car dealership, a salesman came out and introduced himself, and my husband introduced us and the man said" you guys are married!?! what are you, 12?" i thought that was pretty rude, when i was a teenager i was always talked down to or ignored at high end make-up counters because i guess they thought i didn't have any money, and there have been countless other times with me and my husband, it really gets on our nerves, when you look young its like people don't take you seriously

basis of physical appearance... my father is a cuccessful businessman, but he is a bit eccentric and looks "unconventional".... well, he was buying a new car, and a salesman in a posh salon just told him to get out of there, beacuse he is a bump and he is only interested in "serious buyers". my father just laughed in his face, showed him his CEO card and left the building. but the manager saw the whole thing and the salesman was in big trouble.
