COLORADO SPRINGS — Ushers handed out boxes of tissue as members of New Life Church arrived for what would be an emotional service Sunday morning.
The mega-church's upbeat liturgy, with soft-rock hymns and 7,500 worshipers swaying in unison with outstretched arms, was tempered by somber readings of letters from church founder Ted Haggard and his wife. Less than 24 hours earlier, Haggard had been fired by a board of church overseers for unspecified "sexually immoral conduct" after a Denver man accused him of a three-year series of homosexual encounters and illicit drug use.
Haggard, who has spoken out against homosexuality and gay marriage, was nationally prominent as president of the 30-million-member National Association of Evangelicals. He resigned that position last week...
