I think being on the down low refers to being secretly gay WHILE married. It's like living a double life. It's more than just coming out.

That has to be the best question Ive seen on here in days!

I think its because being gay in the black community is not accepted as much, especially a gay male. So alot of them, or so Ive heard, tend to get married and have a family while having little flings on the side with men, they call it on the down low. That way their families and friends dont know, and they get to have a little taste of being gay without any of the pressure. I think its BS personally, but Im not black and dont understand their culture either.

Alot of black men have that ego thing going on and was always taught this is a no-no! So i think most are scared of other black men not being able to except this and beating the crap out of them because they are that way. Let's face it some people are really cruel and especially cruel to the gay community. Black men are susposed to be so manly and strong and for them to admit that their gay makes them feel like less of a person!

Because there are some of them who are married but live a double life and have sex with men. They try not to have their wives/girlfriends find out. They do it in secret that is why it is called the down low.

First off, the label "down low" can refer to anyone, of any color, and gender. It has been specifically targeted at black men because the term itself, originated from a black man recounting some of his "down low" experiences. As with any other terminology, people identified with it and it gained popularity. Now, on to the definition: Someone living on the "down low" is someone who secretly practices a gay lifestyle. They are not openly gay and oftentimes, people on the "down low" even deny they're gay. For example, a man can be married with children, but have a "boyfriend" on the side. And no one knows about this secret relationship except him and his gay lover. As you can see - this label can apply to ANYONE living a truly deceptive lifestyle. Not just black gay males.

That's because the black community in general criticizes black men when they are not manly. It's more of a taboo in their comm. to be a black man who is also gay. They go and get married and then go out and do the damn thing with men on the DL

As someone else said, being 'on the down low' is the opposite of coming out- they are keeping it a secret, keeping it tamped down low so nobody will figure out. It's just part of their terminology- the black equivalent of 'in the closet'.

Well the Majority of the time it is because they actually have no plans to actually "come out". They are pressured by their peers to maintain a very specific image yet they "want" something else. Instead of having the nerve to stand up for what they want they fold to the pressure and remain hidden and live a life of subterfuge and pretension.
