they have lots of episodes that do this. I'm watching one right now that said they don't let gays into a certain meeting, and there was security "checking for gays."
Is this acceptable/funny or is it crossing a line?

I think that a VERY common mistake when comedy of any sort (standup, animated, etc) makes social commentary is that people don't "get" the real message. Kinda why Dave Chappelle stopped making his show. In the joke you've just described, they're making fun of how ridiculous it is for people to not allow gays in their "meeting" (not having seen said episode, I couldn't say more about it; probably makes more sense in context). The guy in American Dad is an absolute ******; he's pretty much allowed to say anything because the joke is usually more about how stupid his views are than about the people he's actually talking about.

It's funny because the character is homophobic, not the show- they're not advocating making fun of gays, but it's something their character does. Personally, I don't think it's crossing a line, but I do think that we should be mature enough to start finding other things funny than always relying on a gay joke to save the day.

I love gay people! But it is just all in fun! The best kind of a sense of humor is appreciating all humor I think! Be it gay, or racial, or physical, or mental. I know & love people in every catagory of life, but when I hear a funny joke, I'm going to laugh! After, I'll say "Oh, that is sooo wrong! But funny!"...you should watch "Drawn together" on the Comedy channel. Now that is some funny sh*t! But it defenitly pokes fun at all kinds of situations!! But funny sh*t!

better like a existence and *** scaring one. I propose, that's basically "spit and pray" in there. and also you dont understand what each and every persons were given. I dont understand what that's like in Australia yet in American reformatory that's brutal and that i'm fairly particular non consensual.

I just saw that same episode. They aren't making fun of gays. They're mocking the GOP.

I always thought they were making fun of homophobes by portraying them discriminating against gays in a way that shows how ridiculous it is. Either way I never took it that seriously.

Easy target

Actually it is satire. By going so overboard they are pointing out the absurdity of it much like Archie Bunker's racism or Borat's antisemitism.

"Family Guy" and it's spinoff "American Dad" both make fun of gays... and the Jewish... and the handicapped... and families... and perverts... there's not a group that they don't make fun of... just take it as a stupid comedy and don't take it so seriously... it is, after all, a cartoon on FOX
