I'm not sure which "scholars" you're referring to, but I've never seen any support for your conclusions among mainstream Biblical academians. Could you give us some references on these "scholars"?
For what it's worth, I posted an entry about Haggard on my blog yesterday. Check out the link below.

I don't know which scholars you are talking about, but they aren't mainstream Biblical, or legitimate historical scholars. I not saying there aren't some biblical, or historical "scholars" from the fringe that believe this lie, but "many," is a clear overstatement. Most of the individuals who teach this idea about Paul either aren't scholars at all (writers, reporters, critics in general), or they are "scholars" in a different field (gender, sexuality, psychology).
If Mr. Haggard committed a homosexual act he couldn't have been following the Bible. It clearly states in the Old Testament and the New Testament that homosexuality is wrong. In fact, I believe it was the Apostle Paul that wrote in the book of Romans that it is a sin.
Of course like any sin, Christ can and will forgive those who repent. Just as I receive forgiveness when I repent (1 John), Mr. Haggard can receive Christ's forgiveness and so can his accuser.

When I posed a similar question in Religion and Spirituality it was reported and pulled for "epithets and slurs." The Yahoo mods should read what the misbelievers post over here if they want to see epithets and slurs. But, though I also posted the question to be provocative, the bizarre behavior driven by a religion that demands we believe in our being damned to hell from birth is what really needs to be questioned. Paul's writings indicate he was married at one time, but don't indicate he was gay in any letter. His "thorn in the flesh" has other explanations that fit, and his encouragement to celibacy is an aspect of all doomsday cults, which Christianity was and continues to be.
The issue with Haggard is his hypocrisy, which extended to persecuting gays and lesbians seeking marriage, which would answer religious objections against sex outside of marriage (we all know the misbelievers actually object to the existence of gays and lesbians), while he himself was commiting adultery with a male prostitute.

Read the Bible. Among other thing, it's about long list of men who have messed up bad. The "heros", Aberham, Moses, David, Job, Samson, and on and on, realize they have done wrong by God, repent, and go on and do great things. The real message of the Bible is, "we mess up - God still loves us" - a lot!.

Assuming he also slept with his wife, it means he is bisexual, surely. I think the bible is sort of opposed to homosexuality. They can be forgiven, though.
