I am Board member of a wonderful organization that does humanitarian work in Kenya- American Friends of Kenya.
We focus on listening to what Kenyans need to help themselves. Usually a lot of NFP want to tackle AIDS or Malaria or one disease when really the overall Public Health system needs to improve.
We send medical supplies and training materials for doctors and nurses. We do one trip a year where volunteer nurses and doctors train and work "hands on" at clinics and hospitals in rural Kenya.
We also ship thousands of books, fund uniforms and shoes for children to be able to get an education.
Some of our goals now are: creating programs for orphanages to empower these kids and give them love, confidence and courage, creating a library that would serve over 900,000 people, expanding our organization across the US, and more.
Our next volunteer trip is July 2008.
Interested in helping?
Please contact me or for more information go to www.afkinc.org.
Thanks!

I am helping to pull together a newsletter for a local non-profit community group. The writers we have approached want money...we don't have a budget for that. We need articles on various topics for our volunteers that we can reprint without paying for the right.

I think we are starting to finally notice that there is something wrong with our world. Global warming, extreme poverty and AIDS.
As a very privelaged group of people, should we start downsizing our homes, cars and our spending on unnecessary things. Will it take a huge disaster for people to take notice? What can we do together to make our world together?

The kids are like a handbag or neckless. These people go to other places to adopt kids to feed the poor. Why? Don't we have enough poor here in the USA?

I coordinate about 125 volunteers to do free tax preparation. What is a good, unique volunteer gift that I could give each of them that wouldn't cost more than $5-$7 per item, but still be something that would be a good keepsake?

Do you know of any volunteer abroad programs that does not require you to pay, or maybe with really minimal payment? My friend is particularily interested in Latin America to become fluent in Spanish after graduation. She was looking for a 3 month or so program. She isn't interested in the Peace Corps. Also, maybe some work abroad programs you know of that are actually good. I am interested in this too, but for anywhere. I would prefer information about places you have done or know someone who has, thanks.

I am trying to think of new and fresh ideas for my organization to raise money. Something where the whole club can come together, bond, and get funds. What are some restaurants and recreation places that do "fundraiser nights" (where whatever is spent that night a portion of it goes back to your organization)?

Such as the Peace Corps, or any others like that.

I don't think it is right that people should be made to feel guilty over something that they are likely to have little or no control about, provided that the charity is legitimate.

These days I think it is far better to do something about the less fortunate people of your own community, rather than people half-a-world away, as the way to deal with their poverty would be to overturn their corrupt governments, instead.

Does every celebrity on E! work for unicef now?

Do they get paid? Is that where the money is going? I know it sounds silly but I think it's even sillier that they are asking Americans who are barely staying above the povery lines in the US to give advice on saving the world.

Yes - we all have iPods and Xboxes but if you take those away then we are a third world nation ourselves...

What do you think?
