One contribution in one area can lead to problems in another. For instance, if you seek to control pollution by working to pick up the litter and fight to control it, you might find that this will create problems for some industries, which in turn will create hardships in another area. Trying to find the one that you can support, is difficult and when you start looking at everything that needs to be done and how it can negatively impact the world, it can get very discouraging.

The fact that many non-profit organizations are a lie. There's no such thing as a "non-profit". They are businesses, and businesses have one purpose- making money.
IF you want to give back to the community, give of your time, talents, and use of equipment. That way you know EXACTLY where your donation goes, without grubby hands getting into the donations and picking out the best parts. That's often a big problem in charities, Believe me- I've volunteered long enough to see it first hand, and not on one occassion; it makes me downright sick.
Example- give people who don't have a car rides to the grocery store or to run errands. There is a GREAT need for that.
Spend time with the elderly- it is a population that is often forgotten, and will soon be the largest group in the U.S. by 2010.
Tutor children, especially in reading and math.
hope this helps.
