I live in Australia, and our government has a special program where college graduates are placed on long term assignments in countries where Australia gives aid. They provide accomodation and a stipend and the focus is on sustainability. I am sure that your government may have a similar program.

There are also a lot of programs that you can volunteer for during your breaks, but watch out - there are some places which appear to be humanitarian focused, but are actually run as profitable businesses trying to sap altruistic people like yourself. You will figure them out with a bit of research and looking into the costs they charge to 'place' you into a volunteer role.

I recently looked into volunteering with children in Africa, and the best one that I found was listed below. It seems like a very earnest and honest organisation, and there is a range of opportunities. The website is a bit messy (but it's all run by volunteers) - I loved especially the Ghana assignments.

Best of luck.

In addition to the links given to you already, you could try visiting http://www.volunteermatch.org . In some organizations you even get college credits for your volunteer service.

Please contact either UNICEF, or David Geffen's organization. There are dozens of International Organizations that will welcome your help. Just write, call, email or fax. Someone will respond. Good luck to you and God bless you.
