My mom and I get along very well, but we don't really have much in common. So I'm usually clueless about what to get her as gifts.

Since it's just me and her, we usually go all out on each other. For her real gifts, I've so far got her a leather jacket, a few nice blouses, a pair of dress shoes and a ring. For her stocking I usually get her stuff like make-up, perfume, lotion, nail polish...but that only goes so far! It's hard to fill up her stocking. So, any ideas? Please don't say a gift card or anything like that. Thanks for your help and happy holidays!

What do you think of the facilities available in the UK? I personally find them dire, having to wash your hands BEFORE you go in and keep looking over your shoulder etc. What do you think needs to be done to improve the situation? Would everyone be prepared to pay for safe and well cleaned public loos? Anyone had any bad experiences? Lets face it, this is something that everyone needs at some time, and we know how it can spoil your day if no 'comfort break' is available!
Your view please ................

I think the Christmas gift giving thing has gone out of control. Family peer pressure has forced my wife and I to buy over a thousand dollars of gift for almost 30 different relatives. We are forced to go via peer and family pressures to three different family celebrations. One on Christmas eve, one one Christmas morning and one in the evening.

Everyone has to outdue each other and buy the adults very expensive goods. One time a few of my brothers decided to cut back and they were told off and quickly had to go back to the big spending of years past.

This year I told my relatives that I would not give any gifts or expect to recieve any also. I am getting alot of negative comments directed at me. Some relatives will not even talk to me now. I may not be able to accept the negative peer and family pressures next year.

How about you, could you stop giving and recieving gifts at Christmas?

Some troll asked the other day why, if we were atheists, we didn't just commit suicide, because our lives were ultimately meaningless.

My reply was that I was looking forward to taking my son to his school bazaar on Saturday morning, somewhere nice for lunch with the family, then have friends visit in the evening; a swim with the children this morning and maybe somewhere this afternoon, we haven't decided yet - all of which has been very nice so far. But it saddened me that anyone could judge life to have meaning ONLY if it concluded with eternal joy, luxury and comfort, and none of the things that make being human interesting.

Why does it take ABSOLUTE perfection to give life any meaning? Why isn't that a selfish expectation?

Would you go in a different direction?

It was 1:30 A.M. on the last day of a transit strike in N.Y.C., and I couldn't get a hotel room...and here I am on a lonely Manhattan street when at the next intersection I noticed four guys hanging out on each corner.

Lucky for me, an empty taxi came by.

Would you take a risk, or go elsewhere?

It's understandable if one isn't a native English speaker though. Although British kids as young as 8 seem to have a full grasp of grammar and proper usage. Why?

Is it with the quality of American English education or the level of education per se? People get defensive and bark back about not being English majors or this is not a university. But without malice, I'm talking about bungling up even simple, basic grade school grammar.

I reiterate, it's SOME, not all. Only objective answers please.

here are some common examples(and a lot of them couldn't even identify what are mistakes)
-grammer
-ain't nobody right letters no more
-compaired
-disorientated
-childrens do learn(c/o Bush himself, well...as expected)
- ten year anniversary
- don't take it personal (very common)
- she sings good
- their not invited
-with regards to
-were did you go
-he don't like that ....and a myriad of others to many to mention

If God sent an angel to tell you that if you travel to a certain place on the oppisite side of the world to get Him an expensive double bacon cheese burger and return back and put it in X location;

In return God promises to take to immediately take you to heaven;no more earthly existence,no death,no judgement, just straight to Heaven.

Would you act on faith and do it?

please answer this: here in Louisville Ky they recently decided that homosexual teachers are cool in the jefferson county school system(as i said earlier Kentucky is getting better in many respects). many xtians have a problem with that.

here's my question: do you xtians also still believe that blacks shouldn't be allowed to mix with whites or that women shouldn't work outside of the home?

I state that there is no such thing as "supernatural".

now, this does not, in the way that I am saying it, mean that the things people call supernatural, do not exist. (well, some do not, but alot of it is real too)

how can I belive both of these things, it seems rather obviously contradictory?

well, this is an issue of defining "supernatural" the word itself would mean that its outside of the natural world. and this is inaccurate. or rather, it would be more accurate to say that the computer your using to read this, is more "supernatural" than say, ghosts.

how? if you were to accept that ghosts existed, would they not be a phenomena in the natural course of things?
computers sure aren't "natural" in that sense.

would it change anything, for those who don't "believe" in the "supernatural", if it was in fact, merely an extension of nature that is entirely beyond the current scope of science?

The only answer an atheist will ever give you goes something like this:

You don't have any physical proof of what you are saying. I've never seen this God you are talking about so he must not exist.

Guess what, I've never seen China, so it must not exist either.

why should we believe what desert tribal rulers say about human sexuality and reject modern knowledge that comes from highly advanced brains?

These religious books that condemn homosexuality are the very same books that condones the subjugation of women, child marraiges, rape, polygamy and slavery

why should i believe some outdated religious book over modern medical knowledge?
