Would you go in a different direction?

It was 1:30 A.M. on the last day of a transit strike in N.Y.C., and I couldn't get a hotel room...and here I am on a lonely Manhattan street when at the next intersection I noticed four guys hanging out on each corner.

Lucky for me, an empty taxi came by.

Would you take a risk, or go elsewhere?

Correction: One hanging out on each corner. Like a set-up and I was about to walk into a trap. Next thing you know, one would ask..."Hey, got a cigarette?"

yeah, lucky for you, you are a guy...

it's way different for women...my first thought when i read your Q, was "i wouldn't be out alone, in NYC, at that hour...walking around..."

should i find myself in the circumstance you describe...i think i would go in a different direction...a woman, alone...it would very much depend on the whole "vibe" i was getting at the time...

i hate having to be afraid of strangers... : (

I certainly wouldn't have "found myself" in a situation such as you describe.

I retired from 32 years in the travel industry as a consultant, tour director, owner and manager. My job was to advise folks how to stay safe when traveling.

There is no way I would have headed for NYC without a hotel reservation in the first place. If, for some reason, I was there in the middle of the night with no room in Manhattan, I would have taken a taxi to the airport or the Port Authority. No way should a tourist or visitor be strolling down the streets of New York alone at that hour of the morning.

I wouldn't take a risk like that. The guys on each corner may have been there innocently but at that time of night it seems a bit suspicious.

i agree with who ever said this i'm more afraid of adults than teens.
and to me it's the utmost truth, because i think teens get over judged.
personally though being a girl i def. would not be out there alone at that time, but if i was i'd of kept on walking or gotten into the cab like you, showing yur afraid only fuiles theses teens more.

I am 23 and much more afraid of adults than youths. I have never had a problem with young people, but have been harassed and put in dangerous positions with many older people.

i agree with you going in the opposite direction. just think if the cab driver did not like the way you looked and did not stop. wow... you know like if you were real young or a minority.. you might have had to fight then... or run.

I would not take the risk, if you think something is wrong you should use your judgement!! You obviously did!!

I'll admit that I would have crossed the street, I'm a girl so being alone at night can be dangerous especially if they are drinking. But for a guy??? I dunno.

I wouldn't deliberately put myself in harms way.
