Never a Struggle. I listen to people all year long and when they mention something they need or want I write it down then when it comes to shopping I have ideas.
Also I love to look through magazines to see what new products have come out. If I see something that looks neat I find out who makes it and write it down. I throw the article in my gift idea folder. I will e-mail the company to find out where in my area they sell the item.
My dad is always the hardest to shop for there is always that one person. The idea is to listen really closely to what a person says. He was talking about a new biography that came out. If he's talking about something then I take a hint. Also with this person I something just go with things that I know he will use or looks forward to each year like liquor chocolates. Some gifts are done each year.
I know people don't like gift certificates but I am always happy to get them. I never want to give a gift that will not be well received or go unused. I like giving gift certificates in a thoughtful way. I like giving people the gift of experience. My parents moved into a new area so I gave them a certificate to environmental centre near their house. It's walking distance from their place. I love giving gift certificates to nursery's that way in the spring people can plant their flowers. Also activities for kids like wall climbing. I'm not a fan of music store gift cards, mall gift cards....to me no thought has gone into that.
However for a family elephant exchange I like to do gift certificates with thought. My husbands family likes a certain pizza place therefore I got a gift certificate for this restaurant along with a video rental. I know that everyone in this gift exchange will appreciate the gift of experience.

I saw this article once about a family who was the same, couldn't think of what to give at Christmas for their friends/family. The mom had this idea of when they try something new if they like it to buy a whole lot of them and put it in away. Like a new spice, type of popcorn, a hand held game, a calender, etc... Then when the holidays came around they would buy some baskets from the store or Goodwill or something like that, put all the things into it, maybe include a gc for a movie theater or something like that, plus a family picture and give them to them. If the friends/family didn't live there ten they would pack it into a box. It was a hit all the time
Something else how about a small box full of cards, envelopes, stamps, pens, etc.. A coffee basket to someone who loves coffee and so forth.

Nope,I seem to have a gift for it! The trick is to pay attention the rest of the year and note down things they say they want. Then at christmas go and buy them.
My present buying is a military operation, lots of lists, very carefully planned and I always have back up ideas in case the first one is sold out! :)
I'm just annoyingly organised I guess lol!

I'm afraid that every year I struggle to buy something original and specific.
Generally I just give up and buy something that they should like, but may not want.
Sorry.

I've bought some great personalised gifts from www.gettingpersonal.co.uk. They have jokey presents and some really original presents. Another great site is www.nameagift.co.uk.

My wife and I solved this problem, albeit only recently. We log into Amazon.com and make out 'wish lists', which can be used for any occasion.
