I´ve heard of thermodynamics and relativity, of electromagnetism and gravity. I´ve heard of many more that have an effect in and on the universe.
But I don´t think that the law of ethics moves planets, lights bulbs or limits the velocity of light.

Right and wrong have a place in society, because without it, no order could be established among living beings. The hubris is when we humans lend leverage on the universe to a "higher entity" invented by us. We lend creative and destructive powers to a virtual construct in the name of right and wrong.
As a matter of fact, you could throw all the goodness or all the evilness in the face of our world, and it wouldn´t even be visible
from Mars. We should realize that there is nothing special about this place, and that the universe wouldn´t even produce a hiccup if we disappeared.
Now, what was the glory of god about, again?

My husband and I don't believe in a God.
Our 8yr old does believe in God, though it's worth noting he remains steadfast in his belief that Spiderman is for real too.

We have in-depth conversations about religion and I have never claimed to know anything for certain, so I leave the door open for him to think and ultimately make his own decisions.

Do you teach your children your beliefs and what other people believe?
Do you expect your children to go to your church?
Does your child really have a choice?

find in the bible the speaking in tongues on a mass scale (i.e. the book of Acts), we know there are provisions for it's usage that way: however, another part instructs us to refrain from the speaking in tongues so we don't sound life a bunch of dweeblacky idiots to those who may not understand, unless there is interpretation. Still another part of the bible tells us to seek after the ability of prophecy more so than that of tongues because prophecy edifies the group (or many) more so, while tongues edifies the one (or self) more often. In view of the afore, can you tell me why is the utterance of tongues so widely utilized and embraced while the undertaking of prophecy seems to be deafeningly silenced in your services, meetings, etc. After reading all that, I hope only serious and knowledgable members address this...thanks...

How many words are there in the english language? Could you please show me a list/link with the number of words in all of the (common) languages? I would like to see which languages have the most complex vocabularies, and thought this would be good for comparison.

Thanks a lot!

Sorry about posting this again, but no one answered last time.

I have asked about the extent emotion or rational thinking are the basis of PERSONAL FAITH. Most people in the past have minimized emotion and attributed their faith more to rationally choosing it.

However, I recall people in many church services calling out, raising their arms, swaying, repeating song choruses, speaking in tongues, crying, dancing, and some even "slain in the spirit" (i.e., fainting).

These are not normally associated with rational thinking. They're really highly emotional.

As a matter of fact, the more cerebral congregations tend to lose members, while the pentecostal and evangelical ones gain.

So if you would like to explain what happens in your services and whether there is a play toward emotions or if there is an appeal to rational thinking.

Thanks.

there is a woman who has been nothing but nice to everyone on this site and never really had a harsh word to anyone but apparently several christians on here seem to have worn her down. my question is why do you feel the need to bash and condem anything or anyone that does not think just like you.
my friend Epona Willow would do anything for anyone if she could. she is a warm, loving, caring person and yet you people tell her how she is going to burn in hell.
well i will tell you what...if there is a hell you will be right there beside us for judging us.
and if there is a hell i would be proud to be standing by her side.

Thankfully, I don't have a stalker! However, it's upsetting that anyone can pay a small fee to any of a number of online companies (under a google search for "find people," etc.) to get a list of your current and previous addresses.

Is there any way to keep one's address private from this sort of company? What if you have a stalker..it's terrifying to think that someone could just look up your address online. How can one keep one's home address and other personal information totally private and inaccessible?

I respect that they have their own opinions, and I'm not trying to put anyone down, but why would you not want their to be a god? How would life be worth living? You live life, and then die. In 10-15 years you will be almost completely forgotten. After you die, there will be nothing. How could you want to believe that? If an athiest is right in his opinions, he will die the same fate of those who believe in heaven. But if a person who believes in the after-life is right, he will live eternally in peace, while the athiest lives in some sort of torturous place for the rest of eternity. I am just curious to how anyone could want or risk that? If you answer respectably and honestly, it will be easier for me to respect your opinions and understand your thinking.

In the Bible God sacrificed his only son.
Can you think of any circumstances where you would have to choose between God and your child?

I was in the bank this morning. The teller is about in her 50s. I am male, 29 years old, very young looking (people sometimes mistake me as 22).

After my transaction, the teller thanked me with the exact words, "Thank you, dear."

I felt totally offended by this. I am not a kid. I'm a professional adult. She could call me by my first name or Mr Lastname or Sir. But not dear. Am I overreacting? Is there a proper etiquette how to address a client in the bank?
