Where the wars so often cited by militants (the Crusades, etc.) primarily religious in nature, or did their root causes stem from other factors such as economics, nationalism, and territorial expansion - as many experts in the field suggest? Or is the truth somewhere in between?

I know this question has been asked before, but this has a different spin and may be better suited for the science board. I am asking AS an agnostic as opposed to a theist/creationist POV. I am therefore hoping for some great ideas on the subject. I want to see what kind of ideas out there and how they compare to my own.

I realize there may be some 'jading' on this subject as most of the time if it is asked, its is done so facetiously. It arose from trying to analyze what is wrong with a theist/creationist line of questioning on this subject. There is nothing wrong with the question if it is asked genuinely. It is rarely ever done so; I am doing so now...

I acknowledge that there will be 'quips' and 'grips' from 'drips' and 'dips' on the other side. They will be short and easy to pass over...

I posted this on another question. Feel free to add your suggestions:

I would think a "Pascal's Wager" would have to contain all of the liquors that the bar has to offer, in one fiery, abysmal, and potentially deadly cocktail.

However, the gag is, when you ask the bartender to make it, you get to choose ONE liquor that you want to be safe from, and he won't put that one in there.

However, if you are an atheist, you don't get to choose that one, so I guess we will get drunk slightly faster. But after the stomach pump, I don't think anyone will care.

Would we still know God. If the bible was never written, we wouldn't no who God is.

Who is to say that the bible is true and not someones imagination?

This is a serious question and I would really like to know what you think about this!

as ridiculous, but cling to the stories of Jesus doing the same.

Isn't it obvious that people were gullible back then, and the same superstitious stories circulated about many different people?

Jesus wasn't the first person to have his followers claim he was born to a virgin or that he rose from the dead or even that he ascended to heaven.

It was practically common place by the time the Jesus cult did it.

So why do the Christians dismiss the other stories, which are backed by as much evidence as their versions?

According to Genesis 6,7, this 'god' drowned all the babies in the world during what amounts to a godly temper tantrum.

I'm just not impressed with those kinds of cosmic credentials. No true God would behave in such a way, yet this bible requires me to believe that one did.

Not going to happen. If I'm to worship a God, it had better be one I can respect.

Not all but some. How can you justify disowning your own child? What is it about religion that can make a person do that? Why would someone value a scripture more then their own flesh and blood?

I love Easter because it gives me and my whole family time to get together and rejoice in what Jesus did for us and what he went through. No greater love.

Degredation/oppression of women?
Child abuse?
Giving money to the church but not to fellow man?
Creating war?
Destroying the planet?
Lying?

I would like to know why the bible and christians make such a big deal about two people of the same sex loving one another, but seem to be okay with the above issues.

Captain Atheist suggested in Kallan's question that we drink a "Three Wise Men" whenever we hit the Pascal's Wager, Why Are There Still Monkies(sic), and Why Are Atheists Here trifecta.

So, all you mixologists out there: What goes into a Three Wise Men?

Why are they still Christian leaders? Newt Gingriche is out on his book tour and thinking of running for president. The cardinals and bishops who moved the molesting priests from parish to parish are still in charge of their diocese or are in Rome on special assignment to the Pope. The members of the school board in Pennsylvania who perjured themselves go back and remain elders of their churches. When do Christians say, "Enough is enough? We forgive you but you have to start over. You are no longer a cardinal, you are no longer leader of the Christian conservatives, you are no longer and elder of the church and we don't want you to be president and we won't buy your book." When will a Christian leader, publicly or privately disgraced, be made to start at the bottom of the Christian organization they lead?
