But *why* is it considered such?
Does the Bible ever say *why* it is a "sin"?

Romans 1:27

And likewise also the men, LEAVING THE NATURAL USE OF THE WOMEN, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.

I have read a lot of the answers and I am ashame of some of them. Listen! God doesn't have to give a reason for everything. He is GOD! He doesn't have to tell us the why's!
Homosexually is an abomination. It is wrong! All I can say is it sounds like we might be getting near as the Bible says: "In The Days Of Noah." Many need to repent before Jesus comes back!

Try reading 1 Corinthians 6:9-10 . It reads: "Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offendersnor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God." (NIV)
The why to your question lies within Leviticus 18:22, "'Do not lie with a man as one lies with a woman; that is detestable." (NIV). It can also be found in Leviticus 20: 13 "'If a man lies with a man as one lies with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They must be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads." (NIV)
God did not create men and men to be together. He did not create women and women to be together. He created man and woman to become as one and to multiply and fill the earth. Hope this helps. Read your Bible, the answer is there. A good concept to remember what the Bible is for is :"Basic Instructions to Believers For Living Everyday." BIBLE.

Sigh- so many answers- and so little understanding!

So, lets try and understand why the laws were given, to cover every aspect of life.

The purpose of this world is for spiritual growth. But their is a fundamental problem- the soul is in a physical body which is no different to any other animal's body, with the same physical needs to eat and procreate. But the body needs to be elevated to the level of the soul, not an easy task given its solid connection to the mundane world.

So the Torah gives a whole lot of laws that are designed to elevate the body spiritually. So eating is transformed via following the laws of kashrus (though why one thing would be worse for as person spiritually than aother is unknown to us- but that is why God gets to lay down the laws- and we follow them). Similarly for other activities. Sex is transformed via marriage- and through avoiding specific relationships and acts. In this case, anal sex is prohibited (for heterosexuals as well- hebrew is gender neutral and int his case, by the justaposition of the commandment against sodomy to the heterosexual forbidden relationships, we can understand it to apply equally to either heterosexual or homosexual relationships.)

And sex is not just for procreation- between husband and wife sex for pleasure is allowed, and even encouraged- in fact, it is a husband's obligation to ensure his wife enjoys the act.

The reason the bible considers it an abomination is because the Judeo-Christian tradition sprung up during the agrarian revolution, when procreating was a must. You needed to reproduce a lot because you needed your children to help out on the farm, and because many of the children would not survive. It is basically an anachronism.

The bible says that eating shrimp is an abominatation. It also says wearing wool clothes that have linen in them is an abomination. It was not gods laws so much as it was the laws of the times to prevent health problems and being cheated. If some one buys wool clothing then they expect to get wool. To not eat pork was a health issue. If a man has sex with another man then he has a good chance of getting an infection that will kill him within months and eventually kill anyone else he has sex with man or woman. It was a health issue. You have to understand the times.

When God created Eve, brought her to Adam, he said, "Therefore shall man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh."

This tells me that when it comes to sex, God wants a (singular) man to be doing it with a (singular) woman. Multiple partners, same-sex partners aren't ok with Him.

In Genesis 9, mostly verse 5... Lot has company- angels. The men of the town wanted to know his guests... and where this is in the Bible, they wanted to know the angels in the Biblical sense! God asked Lot to find a certain number of righteous men. Lot couldn't.... God lowered the number repeatedly. Finally, God asked Lot to find one "righteous man" in the city of Sodom. He couldn't, so God told Lot and his family to leave, then the city was destroyed. It's pretty clear to me that God doesn't want men doing it with men.... reasonable to assume that women doing women is equally unacceptable.

Edit---
I just realized that you wanted to know WHY.... Honestly, I don't know the reason(s) God doesn't approve of homosexual behavior. Like most people, I have my suspicions, which are based on other beliefs I have, but again, God hasn't exactly told us why.

In Corinthians 11, Paul discusses (among other things) the proper relationship between men and women... Verse 11 states, "Nevertheless neither is the man without the woman, neither the woman without the man, in the Lord." My impression of this passage is that God approves of heterosexual marriage- a man and a woman united by God. Combine this with the destruction of Sodom,... well, that's why I feel the way I do.

I have a question... why all the thumbs-down for those who actually try to answer the question?... Those who discount what is said in the Bible or say that God is arbitrary are given no thumbs, but those who actually address the question, who actually put forth some effort are given a thumbs-down... I don't get it.

There doesn't seem to be a lot of explanation or justification for all those rules of behavior, does there? Seems pretty much arbitrary. I guess the Christians are just supposed to shut up and do as they're told.

Actually it does not say such things. What was wrote about Sodom and Gomorrah was because men were rapping boys, not men having sex with men. I was born bi. I did not ask for this. Ive tried so hard to not be. When i realized it i cried. Wouldn't I choose a normal life over this chaos? God made me this way and God does not make mistakes.

It is sin because it is of the devil. LUST of the eye. LUST of the flesh and the PRIDE of life. Look up seed upon the ground. In the old testament and you will find where God killed 2 brothers after intercourse with the same woman because they withdrew and spilled thier seed upon the ground. And people wonder why God dislikes Homos. If the devil had had his way. JESUS would have never been born. The seed of the woman shall bruise his head.

Maybe it's like this. God creates Adam. He then creates a beautiful woman for Him. He tells them to go and multiply and be happy with and appreciative of each other. Men who are patterned after Adam though instead choose to sodomize other men. This is one of many ways in which man has found to rebel against God. Instead of there being a man and woman. There is a man and a man who acts like a woman. Or a woman and a woman who looks and acts like a man. Two people lying to themselves. Role playing. The spread of deadly diseases increase. Like AIDS and Hepatitis. Two women or two men cannot naturally produce children either. The human sex organs were created for 2 primary purposes and neither of them are being fulfilled.

A homosexual is loved by God as much as any man or woman. We are all sinners in one way or another. They must turn away from sin as all us must. And none the less be respected as people.
