Parts of the bible originate less from divine influence and more from human influence. What parts were obviously inserted to further someones cause?
I think one likely candidate would be the idea that it's necessary for one to accept Jesus as your savior or you go to hell. The is so obviously a control mechanism. It allows for some really evil things to happen in the name of Christ. For instance:

1. It creates a position of percieved superiority, which in itself opens to door to corruption.
2. It creates a weapon of fear to weild against the ignorant and unwitting.
3. It is an edict that requires complete submission or suffer horrors worse than you can imagine.
4. It creates an egotistical side to religion, which greatly increases the likelihood of bloodshed.

"Believe it, or else!!" is essentially what that means.

My God does not need to stoop to petty threats to gain popularity.

I’m a Christian and I understand the words Jesus and Paul stated about submitting to authorities and how the testmony as believers is important, but what about something that surpasses all of that? What about mercy, forgiveness, opportunity to live a better life? From my understanding this country was rooted on Biblical principles. Did Jesus not work on Sabbath against the law at the time and question the lawmakers? Did Jesus not cross the borders in the case of the oppressed Samaritan at the well? I sit and wonder what would Jesus do in this case. Would he have received the people or sent them back home when all they wanted to do is work for a better life for their children. I recall a passage where Jesus said to the people of the law to throw the first stone at the prostitute if they found themselves blameless, so in terms of this case doesn’t everyone break the law not just “illegal” immigrants?

My church is interested in attracting more younger families. Our worship service is very traditional and only has very traditional organ and choir music. So, I am particularly interested in what Christians younger than age 40 prefer. Do you like traditional music? Do you like more contemporary music? A combination of both? Let me know what type you prefer and what age category you are in. (Example: 20's, 30's, etc.)

BTW, I my screen name is the mascot of Wake Forest University where I attend divinity school. If I went to Duke University Divinity, my screen name could be Blue Devil.

If God has low self esteem does that make him an atheist?

II have seen a lot of hateful comments on both sides. Don't you guys know every fool has a story to tell? In other words, other than hate, there are elements to each others world views that may indeed be true. For example maybe there is a higher power but it is not necessarily how some fundamentalists envision it. Learn to see some nuance. And also what is wrong focusing on the good passages? Love thy enemy. Judge not lest ye be judged. Mercy triumphs over judgment. No one should be able to say boo about this. & Christians even if you recognize an atheist why not recognized that the mind cannot proof the existence of God? This is not a bad thing. Faith is what you go by so please do not attack them indicating that some day the cosmic boogie man is going to get them. In short be kind to each other. No good is going to come out of attacking each other. At best you will get a sick joy, and at worse you will just feel sick. Personally I'm sick of it all so kiss & make up.

I don't subscribe to any religion really, and don't really care, but I'm just curious why so many have accepted that "2006" is supposedly 2,006 years since the birth of Jesus Christ.

Why is this accepted so widely, even from non-Christians?

I can't stand it. In some ways I see it as emotional teasing- it screws with your head to try and figure out if a comment is heartfelt or not.

Or do you see those people in Born Again denominations to be oppurtunistic of the situation?

And should not freedom of worship and right to beleive the way one chooses be of paramount importance rather than the concept of organized religion since some in the world feel it is a violation of human rights?

For those of you who are not Christians, what would you need to see in Christians to know that having a relationship with Jesus and having him as your Lord and Savior, would make a difference. We all know that no religion has perfect followers and yes there are a lot of hypocrites, but no matter how much we try, we cannot get everyone to exemplify Christ every day.

So, if you could only meet one Christian, what would you need to see or hear from that person to convince you that Jesus is real and that following Christ will be the best decision you could make?

I was referring to in our own lives......whether it be going up against drug dealers, standing up to nasty bosses & saying you won't commit the unethical act they ask you too for the sake of the job or churches that preach fear, guilt & control? Now what do you all have to say?

Preachers kids, missionary kids, and deacons kids can especially understand my question. If you did not grow up gowing to church at least 3 times per week then you are probably not qualified to answer this question. A hatred towards the church is not the point. Especially by those who have never really been inside the church. I am looking for those who grew up in loving families but who have a hard time reconciling the zealous life inside the church with a life a peace.
