The people that cut their wrists generally do not want to feel pain, they are trying to kill themselves. Thus, they want to get out of pain.

Unless you mean the people who are cutters. Those are the folks who do the tiny cuts that sort of bleed a little. They say it is to see if they can still feel. Personally, I am not sure. I think part of it is about getting attention. That part is not life threatening and yet it is gross enough to warrant folks getting very upset.

Your suggestion is actually a good solution though. If you can get someone off their butt and exercising, it will cure a lot of depression. The endorphins generated generally make you feel good, as well as exhausted. Plus, the tune up of the body makes you more attractive to others, thus more likely to have a relationship. A relationship with another person keeps you too busy to get that self-involved.

Good solution. Now get those cutters up and running!

To someone that can't imagine being in their minds, it is an aweful thing to think about--but these people have so much pain inside, and they feel the only way to get some of it out is by cutting themselves. There are people who use what you suggested though, they exercise so much, to get their feelings out, and to feel the pain. Some people eat, drink, do drugs--no one is the same. The "new" craze is eraser burns on your body--these are very painful and leave horrid lasting scars. Aren't you glad that you dont have that much stored up pain, that you would try anything to let it out? And yes, there are people who have killed themselves from cutting, they either get too deep, or cut a major artery.

When depressed it is often difficult to do anything, even exercise. People sometimes hate themselves and believe that they deserve the pain or prehaps it will act as a catharsis through which the may purge the hated identity. It's a complex thing and difficult to explain to someone who hasn't been there.

People who cut themselves are often isolated, either physically or psychologically, from others and they may hope for some attention through their actions. It may also be a precursor to suicide so while they are simply self harming and attention seeking, death is less likely. But if the behaviour continues, it can lead to death

Honestly, I think there's different reasons

Some want attention, I know that sounds rude but it's true

And some feel that's the only way to escape

And others relish the pain,
go figureon why they don't do something else, though they probably do a combination of things

No, it would take a pretty deep cut for the blood not to clot and for them to die. But it is possible :(

People who cut their wrists, do not necessarily want to feel pain. I think most of the time they are to numb to feel anything. Depression is a very terrible, scary and misunderstood illness. Yes, sometimes they do die. The wife of a friend of mine shot herself. She didn't make it. He tried to live without her and couldn't. He shot himself in the head, but he lived. Depression can be a very serious illness. It's really sad more people don't realize the danger of depression.

When depression strikes, a person has lost their sense of logic. They think that without them on Earth life would be better, sunnier and happier. They think that all their troubles will disappear once they are dead. Their objective is not to feel pain. They just want to die or attempt to die. When you can think about exercising to rid of your stress or worries, a.k.a managing your stress level, you are not in depression.

Hi, what happens is that depressed people have no hope in the future and they take out their anger and stress by harming themselves and thereby hoping the people who care about them will see this and say something to them- their seeking attention.

If they get to the point of cutting their wrists, I don't think only exercise would help.

most times its a cry out for help without having to ask for it, its not so much to feel the pain but a test run for suicide to actually see if they could go through with it or not
