Before your friend gets a tattoo in a language that he cannot read I'd suggest that you examine the following website. It is full of embarrassing tattoos that people have gotten in various Asian languages.
Also, my sister worked in a tattoo parlor for four years and when someone comes in to get the Asian character tattoos the artists are all laughing behind their back. There are so many more original things to get.

I have a kid that's fluent in Japanese, but they are at the fireworks right now, wish I could have helped you out.
