BENTONVILLE — Unexpected visitors have arrived at Poppi’s Italian Family Kitchen. The visitors — approximately half a dozen garden gnomes — mysteriously landed atop the restaurant at 927 N. W. 12 th St. sometime in the past two weeks. Restaurant owner Dan Perryman believes it was in connection with the June 21 summer solstice because all the gnomes were facing east, toward the sunrise. In many ancient cultures, primitive peoples built elaborate temples and structures to mark the occasion. Perhaps the gnomes are serving that purpose. “ The gnomes have a different religion than the rest of us have, ” Perryman said. A leader sits in front of the remaining gnomes, who have no identifying marks or name badges. “ Privacy is very important to the gnomes, ” Perryman said. He doesn’t know exactly why the gnomes are at the restaurant, but he’s glad they’re around for now. “ We’ve noticed there’s fewer pigeons, ” he said. “ We think they’re afraid of the gnomes. ”
