This is in response to those who cite human arrogance in response to findings in biology/cosmology that apparently contradict their beliefs.

I never said *complete* understanding. I think the universe is too big in comparison to the human brain for that.
But much of the universe is understandable and I don't think it's arrogant to say we have a very good shot at understanding some pretty good parts of the universe--like how we evolved.

not at all. its idealistic.

we may never know the entire workings of the universe, but we are on course to understanding the creation of matter and have the ability to create theories of cosmolgy .

considering that we are but the stuff of stars evolved into life and able to observe from where we came, a mere speck of the whole universe able to gain knowledge of the universe itself, its just truly amazing.

That some people may be arrogant when debating creationists is no different than the creationists who become belligerent and ignore the science. in other words its a personal problem , not a generalized one that applies to all.

No, it isn't arrogance; even looking at it from a Christian perspective. Assuming the "Church" is right, the mind of God is infinite. As such, no matter how much we learn, we will never know even the smallest part of it.
But the universe is not infinite. Though God may have no boundaries, His creation does. To think that with our finite minds we can gain an understanding of a finite universe is not arrogance. It's logic. The arrogance doesn't come from science.

"Arrogance" is believing we understand even the smallest part of the mind of God. For the Church, or for any of us, to assert we have the answers when it comes to religion... THAT is arrogance.

it is arrogant to claim complete understanding and knowledge of ANYTHING.
it is the wise man who knows- there may be something here which i do not yet understand- the meaning of which could change everything!!!

man has ego. ego is what distorts all of religion, no matter how pure it's beginning, once the madness of man's mind gets it's hands into it- it is no longer pure.

there are/ have been egoless humans living in the world...we call them saints and holy masters, and most of the time we crucify them or call them crazy. this is the insanity of the human ego.

but, being human, with all the drama, is part of the process of evolution, or ascention. to experience becoming more conscious. to experience being human, growing and learning through life's experiences and challenges, and then to evolve to a higher state of being. it is the process which we have all chosen to experience- this is life, it is eternal, infinite, and it is beautiful.

It isn't arrogant to believe we have a shot at it, but it is arrogant to assume we are capable of it.

We may or may not eventually have a complete understanding of the workings of the universe. It certainly seems worth a try.

You can't learn if you don't push your limits. I wouldn't call it arrogance as much as innate human curiosity. We like to know why.
