I'm in Charleston, SC, USA. We never really get that cold but the fluctuations have been amazing so far this month. I start out in the morning all bundled up, by noon I'm ripping off clothes, then putting them back on again. Global Warming or what?

Tonight when I left work it was the first time in a few weeks my windows weren't frosted over. Why is that?

For most of the last month or so the temperature at night has been dropping down into the mid to low 20s. The average temp. during the day has probably been in the mid 50s. When I left work tonight the temp had already dropped to its lowest this winters (about 20) but my windows didn't have a spec of ice on them. Anyone have a clue why? (by the way, I'm not complaining)

For what it's worth the high today was probably in the mid 40s (where it's mainly been mid 50s) and the temp was probably below freezing by 6:00-6:30 (sundown is about 4:30-4:45). Also, my community is right next to a large - but shallow lake (average depth is about 30-40 feet).

Why is it that precipitation under 32 degrees is sometimes light fluffy snow and sometimes crappy cold sleet/freezing rain? What atmospheric differences exist to deterine what form the precipitation will take? And how does hail fit in? Becase hail falls at temps much above 32 degrees sometimes.

Do you like being cold and living in an area where it snows in winter or do you like the warmth of the desert this time of the year. And why?
