A cold front is the border between cold air behind the front and relatively warmer air ahead of the front. The cold air displaces the warm air. A warm front is also the border between warm air and relatively colder air. This frontal surface moves in a way such that the warm air replaces the cold air. If a cold front catches up to and moves under a warm front the zone along this interface is called a cold occlusion and on the weather map should be an extension of the cold front. If the cold front catches up to the warm front and rides up over it, then the zone along this interface is called a warm front occlusion and on the weather map is an extension of the warm front. The cold front is colored blue on a weather map, the warm front is red, and both types of occlusions are colored purple.
