I mean a real debate, where someone for and someone against the idea got to present their respective cases, and rebut the other's case? Has there ever been serious discussion on this, or has "mainstream" science just rejected it out of hand?

My partner cuts up polystyrene (plastic foam) as a way of recycling materials for packaging. It's very efficient but the build up of static electricity slows the job down and drives her crazy.

She uses a wooden board and a steel knife with a bone handle, cuts the polystyrene into cubes about the size of a dice, and then puts them into a carboard box before going onto the next piece.

The static electricity build up causes the little cubes to cling to everything and sometimes to 'refuse' to go into the box!

As you can imagine, it slows the whole process down.

Any ideas about how to reduce the build up of static electricity?

Thanks!

If I had the exact address of a house built on a piece of property, that was at one time farm land, how or where on the internet could I find public records of what was on that land, before the house was built? The house and the houses around it were infiltrated with excessive amounts of mold. I need to find out if the houses were built on some kind of toxic waste land, or if there were springs underground, or if something has been covered up. The house is located in the Little Britain Township, in Lancaster, PA. Thanks. Also, any college professors or students that know of any kind of toxic chemical that could possibly grow mold, I'd be interested in hearing about it. I once read that Erin Brockovich found excessive amounts of mold in her house in Conejo Valley, CA. and was wondering if any kind of toxic chemical being dumped on land could cause it. If it helps a mold test was taken, and Penicillium,Asperguillius, and Cladisporin were found. No water leaks were ever found in the house

I am writing a story and it involves dinosaurs and grad students in Paleontology and Evolutionary Biology. I have a professor character who is an adviser to both and I would like to have some options as to reasonable areas of expertise for this character. Could he be either a Paleontologist or Evolutionary Biologist himself? What about a Geologist? Anything else? The story takes place in the hills/jungles of Peru so I would like to endow the characters with practical traits useful in this environment.

My parents didn't go to college and my grandparents and on were all farmers. So I basically came from an uneducated background, and in school my friends all tell me how slow I am when it comes to common sense. Also when there are tests I have to study extra to get the materials through my head, while my other friend barely studies and get the same grades as me. Is it true that genetics affects you intelligence? Like I can become smart through books and become book smart but, when it comes to street smart its all genetics.

I love wordplay, but actually am kinda' curious on this one. If you don't already know, any organic matter can be processed into synthetic diamonds - some folks even have their deceased loved ones preserved in that manner. So if x = number of average-sized carrots processed into a synthetic diamond, solve for "x" in this equation:

x carrots = 1 carat

Curious. :-)

In a recent post I learned that CNTB has met Lynn Margulis, and emucompboy ran into astronaut Harrison Schmidt (the last man on the moon). They can tell you their stories.

My own favorite brush with fame was taking course in the Philosophy of Mathematics with Alonzo Church. (Of Church-Turing Thesis fame.) It was my last quarter as an undergraduate at UCLA ... and I was thrilled to know that he was teaching there, although in the Philosophy department, not Mathematics.

Anyone else? Eavesdrop on Watson and Crick arguing over a check at a restaurant? Catch Richard Dawkins buying fishsticks at the Safeway? Engage in an angry debate with Stephen Hawking at a physics symposium?
