On Wikipedia's article on Dead Air, I discovered that there is a condition called "Dead Air", which means that a broadcasting station's carrier frequency is being transmitted, but there is a lack of modulation (sound and/or video data). I was wondering why it is such a crime, and what damage does it do?

Hi there!

We are building a robot at my university, as a part of a competition. One of the features it has to have is that, it should be able to detect black drums, as it passes by. So the robot will keep moving on its wheels, and when it detects a black drum (at about 10 cm on one side), it should stop and do something on it.

Our first obvious choice was to use a IR transmitter/detector circuit. But this isnt very straightforward, as black objects absorb IR, rather than reflecting it.

I would be glad if someone can tell me how this could be accomplished, and the circuit which we would require. This would help us 'greatly'.

Now our total budget for the robot is 150 dollars (it is the rule). So any pricey component wont do. So at max, we can afford a sensor which is 20 dollars (we need two of these, one is for detecting the drum's height, which is another task)

Thanks!

Hi,

How could a 5-volt logic circuit control a 12-volt motor? Which parts of the circuit are 5-volt and which are 12-volt?

Here's the diagram of the circuit: http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q208/infinitbelt/circuit.jpg

Any ideas?

Thanks!

I have a 45-50 foot tall Silver Maple tree over my 2 story home and bedroom. I am concerned about one of the limbs crashing through my roof in a storm or high wind as the tree is 65+ years old. I would like to reinforce the roof/wall structure. I have a typical 1980 build wood frame home with trusses in the attic. I believe the weight of the branches could easily crash through the entire 2nd story and framing. Any thoughts? I was considering adding 4X4 framing in the attic along with a heavy duty military cargo netting to distribute the load among the entire truss system in case a limb falls on the roof. I would like to avoid a few thousand pound limb falling on me while sleeping. We love the tree - so cutting it down is not an option. I have pictures if needed to understand the situation.

If one was interested in Robotics, and wanted to become an engineer of robotics or a professor, would they obtain a B.S.M.E (that is coupled with a dual program to obtain a master's at the same time) and then attempt to get in at MIT, Georgie, Carnegie Mellon, etc, or is there a different route?

I've been building small electrical mono-neural robots since I was a kid, and I believe this is what I want to do. Is there a future in this field? Academically?
