This goes for any of the fields and not just EE. People tend to pursue what interests them. Men and women have different interests for the most part, and that is just the real world.

I think women/girls have been told in the past that Math and Science are easier for boys, and girls should concentrate on other areas of study.
This is an outdated concept, and today, more and more women are getting into engineering.
I predict that 20 years from now engineering will be 50:50 (if not very close).

This is not as common as a few years ago. Think of 30 years ago, girls were not steered toward engineering even if they had a good mathematics aptitude. Now teachers are being pro-active toward encouraging students of both sexes toward fields of study they show an aptitude for.

Because men tend to understand concrete subjects like math and science better than women, whereas women tend to understand abstract subjects like the humanities better than men.
