Astronomy & Space - December 2007

I have owned a C-11 on a german equatorial mount for several years now. It tracks beautifully, and I am considering expanding into photography. Pretty sure I want to go with a CCD approach, but my concerns are:

1. Color or monochrome with multiple exposures and filters? I've heard color is getting better in terms of fine detail - any experiences worth relating?
2. Do I need to take a laptop to the site? I have one, but it might get messy. What are the advantages / disadvantages?
3. What do I need for guiding?

I don't know much about it. I will also be working with my club and my telescope dealer friend, but every opinion helps. My long-term interests are in the area of deep-sky objects, although some lunar / planetary shots would be great and would obviously be easier in terms of exposure time, tracking fatigue, etc..

Thanks for your help!

That there is life besides that on Earth? Give reasons why you believe so, and if you do believe so, do you think they will ever visit us?

Okay, some of you know I posted this link before, but for those who haven't you gotta see this. It's the Hubble image of M81. It's incredible. You can use the magnifier and scan around. It's like having zoom binoculars, or a microscope.

While exploring this photo, I have been amazed at how many galaxies are in it. I know this sounds dumb, but I'm going to try to count them. Any guesses? It'll take me a few days, I think. What I'd really like to do is make a small thumbnail of each one and put them all together in a huge montage. Anyway, go see it and take a guess. I'll be back in a few days.

I was looking out of the window last night at the stars and was thinking how come there is space? I mean surely space can't have always existed can it, surely there was a start?

Surely space cannot just keep going on forever in any direction, but then again how is it possible to end, what would be one mile the other side of the end of space?
If space does just keep going on forever well there must be infinite planets like Earth where there is intelligent life on it. We can't be the only one in this whole infinite space.
10 points to the person who gives the correct answer. lol.

pls send me a proper positioning of the NEOs and libration points of earth-moon system. are neos closer to earth than the low-earth-orbit or are they farther. is it feasible to propose vehicles travelling on hypersonic speeds for the transport of people into outer space?and how much time will it really take to reach near NEOs at hypersonic speeds.
pls search for it and reply. i'll be really thankful to one who will answer this question and solve my problem. i know its challenging but pls!

Ive seen this question posted lots of different times by different people. Right up front I say it is interesting to thing of our solar system as an atom.

They atom has the middle called the nucleus which is made up of protons and neutrons.

Orbiting all around the nucleus is electrons. Kind of like our plantes orbit around the sun. So the very building blocks that make up matter looks like our solar system.

I bought into this until I came upon what is called an ionized atom.

of course that means two atoms of different elements for what is called a compound and they electrons move right out of one atom into another.

Kind of reminds me how our moon is moving further away from us each year. Or is it being pulled away by another universe or (atom).

Anyone else find this interesting at all.

Also please forgive my spelling im bout to fall asleep and its like 2am in the morning.

Would plants grow taller on the moon? Yes, I know there is no air on the moon. It would be in a greenhouse or something. Would they grow a little taller, six times as tall, or about the same?

There's like a huge circle around it. Go outside and look at the moon and tell me what's going on! It's really neat.

nothing can be infinant, so it has to come to a end. If it comes to a end, what is outside? What is outside of that? Then what is outside of that? It becomes infinant where the possibility of being infinant is impossible

I read in a news story that if this Mars-bound asteroid collides with the planet " it will do so near the location of its Opportunity rover, which has been exploring the Martian surface for three years."

I also read the chance it will hit the planet is 1/75. Here I see a contradiction -- if you can't predict it will even hit the planet, how can one say it will hit near the rover?

I'm guessing that all that can be predicted is that if an impact occurs it will be somewhere on the same side of the planet that Opportunity is on. I'd hardly call that "near."

Any other ideas?
