nothing can be infinant, so it has to come to a end. If it comes to a end, what is outside? What is outside of that? Then what is outside of that? It becomes infinant where the possibility of being infinant is impossible

I have been pondering this question since the first day i looked up into the heavens. I am just a mere mortal being like you are , and so, as such cannot answer this question, but wanted to thank you for asking it, as i will be looking forward to seeing the responses. About one year ago, i was floating on this raft in our pool, and one night i found myself looking up at the stars, and had the strangest revelation of my life, for a short period there, i had felt that i had discovered the key to the universe. As i was lieing there looking up, i had this strange sensation that i was at one with the universe, in that, i started sensing that i was in fact looking at myself as i looked up at the shining stars. That night i felt a correlation between the human mind, and the stars that i was looking up at. In that, maybe the human brain, is but a micro cosm of the universe, they both seem to share a lot of the same characteristics, the brain is made up of gray matter, the universe dark matter. they both possess billions of points of light ~ stars-universe/ neurons-brain ~ the human brain is said to hold 100 billion neurons, and the universe, well, not sure, but i seem to recall that same number being thrown around, each star throws off energy, as does each neuron, and what is thought? Could the magnetic field, be in effect the same energy that makes up our thought process? And if so, the question would be, if the brain IS a black whole of the universe, and vice, versa, well, just exactly what is it that it ~ the universe ~ is thinking? That's the question!! Anyway, i apologize for going off point, just wanted to share this observation with you, as i like you, find this subject very interesting. And for those of you who are bound to ask just what it was that i was smoking that night,,,umm,,no comment. j/k ~ gave that stuff up yeeeeears ago ~ but that night, i truly was at one with the universe, and it felt good.

I have heard the theory of alternative unviverses floated around before, so, that's a tough question to answer. But what amazes me is that there are those out there arrogant enough to think they can answer it. Some of the greatest minds of the millennium have spent their entire lives trying to answer these questions about space ,and time, from Nicolaus Copernicus, to Galileo, Sir Isaac Newton, Einstein, to Hawkins,etc.etc... and none have come up with a definitive answer

And yet here we have the likes of Lab Sci,and others, that act as if this is a simple answer, Lab Sci, with all do respect, your answer demonstrates that you not only do not have the answer, but that you cannot even comprehend the question posed. You state that in regards to the universe " It is expanding without physical limits into the empty void of space " , that's what the question poser is alluding to. expanding into what? Thats the question, your limited mind, answers into " nothingness "..is that even a word? Come on now,,you can do better than that! And then you go onto state that " There is nothing outside of space, because there is no outside, or inside, of space, since space is nothing. Infinity is a concept that can be grasped only when you have accepted the possibility of nothingness ", well, you go right on accepting the concept of nothing, but once you have done so, what's the point in going on? I pity you, as you have all the answers, the wonder of life does not exist for you.The man that asked this question has an imagination, you on the other hand. Well, you have nothing ~ laughing ~..you have all the answers. Must be nice, huh? Thanks for enlighting us!!!

Oh, and by the way, Space IS something, for without it, you would'nt be sitting here right now calling it 'nothing ',..space can be measured in time, and distance, hence, it is NOT nothing, your answer proves my point, it is taking up 'space' and yet it is something, nothing of relavence, but something nonetheless, even your simple little answer is not 'nothing' for without it, we would not have humor. I think so anyway. I love you too, Merry Christmas!!!!

I am quoting a previouse post....

The current understanding is that the universe is finite but infinite.

It's sort of like a sphere to 2D creatures. They can travel around and around forever. For us 3D creatures, it's different, but similar.

Also, the Universe is definitely not infinite in the usual sense because it has been recorded to be expanding.

I agree (though it sounds as if he is implying a knowledge of Superstring/M-theory). However to the notion of whats out side of the universe is irrelavant. Since the only thing that could influence the expansion of the universe is its internal mass; either slowing it down or speading it up.(which is just my thoughts on the issue) Unless one could show that the direction of expansion can be changed, which than would imply that there is something out side of the universe (using the ideals set forth in the expansionary space theory). Which also means that the universe is also the same shape of the original occurance, provided that the rate of expansion would be egual in every direction to its horizion.

The universe is finite. Space is infinite. Space is the nothingness, the Universe is all the matter and energy within space. That is why the Universe can be expanding. It is expanding without physical limits into the empty void of space.

There is nothing outside of space, because there is no outside, or inside, of space, since space is nothing. Infinity is a concept that can be grasped only when you have accepted the possibility of nothingness. Once you reach the limit of the matter and energy at the edge of the Universe, then there is nothing; no edge, no boundary, no force-field, just nothingness forever.

Nobody knows where space ends, nobody knows what is after IF space ends somewhere. There is no physical law that forbids infinity. The fact that we don´t understand Infinity doesn´t mean is not possible.

Yes there is a end. One word makes this clear, Balance. Everything we see, experience, and learn has in it, balance. Space was born and will die like all creation. For we live in Time , Space, and Balance.

Yes there is a end. But theres always another town around the corner, and around that corner, and that too and so on...

your premise is wrong. May things are infinite and have no ending. Take whole numbers for example, they never end, you can keep adding forever. Now go the other direction, and there are things which have no beginning, and yet exist.

Then you have things like odd numbers, which are also infinite, but logic tells us there are half and many as whole numbers, so they should be less, but they aren't. Now put negative numbers in the mix...

Like numbers, space is infinite with no end.

Hmmm, seems to me that much the same questions were being asked a few hundred years ago about our world. Did you fall off the edge if you went too far...

it is a certain size, but it is expanding at the speed of light, so until we can travel faster than the speed of light, these questions will have to be left to science fiction writers.
