I am stunned by how ignorant some people here are. You posted in a scientific forum, and I would have expected more rational, fact-based answers. Only a couple come close.

I am talking on a universal scale here, not just our solar system (don't be parochial).

We are close to the dawn of the universe. We (compared to its ultimate age) are at the beginning, when it is sill young. Everything runs down over time (2nd law thermodynamics) and the sky will gradually dim, although over a vast age.

Eventually the universe will end in proton decay. The downhill run towards this will start in roughly 10^14 years; at 10^15 years planets will be wandering away from their dead suns; at 10^30 years galaxy sized black holes will have formed (this won't be an easy time for our descendents); at this stage, proton decay will have destroyed most of whatever matter remains.

Even then, these massive black holes will be slowly evaporating (by Hawking Radiation) and at 10^98 years even they will be gone. The dark era will begin. The only thing to exist is time.

This answer, while perhaps not to your liking, is fact-based.

The SUN is forecasted to use up all of its Hydrogen Gas fuel supplies in roughly Five Billion Years. When that happens it will switch over to using its supplies of Helium Gas for the nuclear fusion process which has been going on since its birth. That fusion process is what has been delivering light and heat to the Earth. When the Sun begins burning Helium it will expand in size to 3X or 5X its present size. That will mean that the heat and radiation bombarding Earth will increase dramaticly and incinerate everything on the planet.

So, unless you plan on living for a million years or so, I don't thing that you, your children, or their children, have anything to worry about as far as the END coming next week, etc. Yes, we (the EArth) might be hit by an asteroid at any time over that 5 Billion Years and terrible times might result. However, there is very little we could do about it, so I would not loose to much sleep worrying about it. The Earth is being bombarded by space junk all the time and seems fairly capable of going right along without missing a beat.

On the other hand, if you wish to climb up on a stage and preach doomsday theories to the world, you might collect an audience down on 52nd Street in New York City, NY, or out in Los Angeles, CA. While you are busy doing that, the rest of us will continue planting our crops and paying taxes.

yes and here my explanation:
i will put it in this way, if i asked you when are you going to die you might answer i dont know because the possibilities are really few to tell but also you cant tell how safe you are anything could cause any sudden death at any time so chances are 50% but when you are sick the possibilities percentage will increase. and its the same with the " end" idea Apocalypse or what ever you call it if you mean the end of the world i think its soon because the whole world is missed up and wars every where so yeah the world now is in pretty much sickness condition oh by the way your question is interesting and very broad

i think you
got my idea

Since this was posted to a scientific forum, here is a somewhat scientific answer: The earth will continue to be here for a long, long time (i.e., billions of years). However, mankind or nature may disturb the delicate heat balance that makes the climate habitable for us and our food sources, but even this would take considerable time - perhaps hundreds of years. Of course, there remains the remote possibility of a large asteroid collision with earth, but this is a rare event - we know of or suspect about a half dozen of these in the past 500 million years.

If you are new to the planet (i.e. a young person), plan on the earth being here for your entire life and that of your children, and do your best to take good care of it.

I don`t think so.I think that all these people that say this are just freaky.Makes me wonder if they want the end to be near ?We are here to stay as long as we keep reminding ourselves that we are "Not" the most Important thing on this planet. As long as we all live together in harmony we`ll do just fine.We just can`t control what this planet does.It is conceded of people to think that we are superior. That is just human nature for you.We are just a part of this world.A small fraction of all living things.

Yes...Ifact the end is very near.
According to quran which is also know as a book of modern science... "the end of universe is sure and its markings are mentioned before the massive destruction of the universe such as follows

Earthquakes will rise to new height,
Sex will be done openly,
Bloodshed will increase,
Son and daughters do not mind of their mothers,
The sky will become red like rose,
And on the destruction day the sun will rise from the west.

In the Bible, it declares that there is a judgment day when there is gloom and doom. Earthquakes, the moon turns red (it has turned red already), the sun becomes dark. Turn to Jesus before it is too late.

By science, it is not a pretty picture either. maybe an asteroid will hit the earth, or there are natural calamities that strike the earth.

Visit an United Pentecostal Church. You will find hope and peace and joy and righteousness. You can escape the doom and gloom of the last days.

in about 5 billion years our star the sun will swell into a red giant after it has used all of its fuel and consume the inner planets and will scorch earth so that no life will survive, so the end will be in about 5 billion years,
