There is a very bright star sitting right beside of the moon tonight. It really stands out-you cant miss it. Does anyone know if thats a star-or possibly a planet? Such as maybe Jupiter or Mars?

During early evening (before all stars are visible), toward the West, I have noticed a brilliant star. Is this a star, or is it a planet?

If you shoot it, that might cause a galactic war. But if you let it take your child, the good folks from child services might be paying you a visit. This is really a no-win situation...

Obviously the scope needs to be balanced so that it moves freely (on the German equatorial [G.E.] mount) about both the R.A. and dec. axis (pl. form?), but I don't know much more than that. My instructional manual talks about how to balance the reflecting telescope in R.A. and in dec. (though I could use a little clarification on their instructions) but it does NOT explain why you would put the telescope in either of these positions. I understand that R.A. involves moving the scope around the polar axis, and declination allows you move away from the center of the sky's rotation (practically centered on Polaris) to any star in the sky, except when the tripod gets in the way. How do we balance the scope in each position, and why do we choose one over the other?

Bonus question: With a smaller weight and a larger weight, how are each used in the balancing process and is it okay to switch the weights with the scope still attached to the mount?

I understand the importance to study our earth, but why do we spend so much time and money trying to find out whether life happenned in some galaxy so far away that we couldn't possibly get to it if we even found it? Just curious?

Temperatures on Earth fluctuate wildly because of the atmosphere. How about the tempeture in space around Earth and does it change much? (e.g. within a day and within a year?)

I've heard more than once that space walks are really dangerous because the astronault is only connected the spacecraft by a small line and, if that line is somehow severed, the astronaut would be lost in space. This begs the question: why not just tether the astronaut with a stronger line or a backup? Is this a legitimate concern or are there other aspects of spacewalking far more dangerous?
