What is the bright object to the left tonight?

Its the planet Venus. Its been that bright (and even brighter) for a few months (since about mid-January).
Every 8 years or so Venus's orbit and Earth's align in a way that makes it appear very bright and appear for hours after sunset (you can even see it in the daytime if you know where to look).
