Most likely you haven't noticed Venus before because it wasn't so close to the moon.

Look again tomorron night and you will see the moon will have moved quite a distance from it, but Venus is still there as bright as tonight.

It is cloudy here tonight. :-(
But that bright star is Venus.
You never saw it before because you didn't look before. Venus has been that bright in that part of the sky for a couple months now, but the Moon wasn't close to it, so it never caught you attention. Tonight only, the Moon is very near. It must make a nice pair. I wish I could see it! Stupid clouds.

Oh! I just went outside and the pair is peeking dimly through the clouds. Nice. Not great, but nice.

So glad you asked, cuz now I don't have to. lol. I figured it was a planet because no other stars are visible yet, but there was a super-bright "star" right next to the moon. I went to Stardate.org and had it narrowed down to Mercury or Venus.

Isn't it an awesome sight?

Because you don't look up very often? That's the planet Venus.
