I understand the importance to study our earth, but why do we spend so much time and money trying to find out whether life happenned in some galaxy so far away that we couldn't possibly get to it if we even found it? Just curious?

Well the this answer speaks for itself. People want to explore things around them and away from them because it's for research and curiosity. Like all human beings we like to find out things that we don't understand and like to be the first to discover new things. It's just plain curiosity. For example: Where does the universe end? Have you ever wondered what other life forms are out in the universe or planets that are very similar to earth?

Your natural curiosity appears to end at troubling questions - and doesn't extend to looking up at the sky.

Why bother to study our earth? Nothing there of interest anyway.

The scientific mind wants to know all that is, all that was, and all that could be. That's the reason for exploration.

Without exploration and vision, you're just another sheep following the leadership of some religion or self-serving leader.
