I'm studying wind turbine technology at the moment. I'm stuck on the concept of feathering. It is exploited in order to ensure that a turbine will only go so fast in a high wind. But how does it work?

I'm not thinking of a normal habitat that might occur in nature, but rather a bio-engineered habitat. It seems to me that one actually could evolve a habitat with a mixture of microorganisms that are evolved to be responsive to certain very specific fish in certain very specific ways - ways which may enable a fish not normally accustomed to one type of water to handle it at least at a tolerable level.

There's not necessarily an ultimate "purpose" for such a scenario, I'm just curious if we currently have the knowledge that would be required to produce such a thing. It would make for some interesting "novelty aquatic displays", I'd think.

To be clear, I do not mean via any technological route or any sort of trickery. I mean for instance that I look at the wall beside me - is there anything my mind can do to turn the simple act of paying attention to the wall into actually causing changes within the atoms of the wall - even if only on the subatomic level? That's just an example scenario, feel free to refer to it or to any other mind/matter scenario you wish in your reply.

I'm posting this here instead of the religion & spirituality forums because if it can occur at all, the type of phenomenon I'm inquiring about would be empirically verifiable and thus within the realm of science. Unfalsifiable answers and speculations based on things which are not empirically observable - these things need not apply. ;-)

First, I do believe, and if you think about it, its impossible that there aren't any. Just think about how many stars there are just in our galaxy. Now think about how many of those stars have planets. and now think about how many galaxies there are. Does anyone else feel that its impossible that we could be the only living things in this Universe?

You designed a stunt in which a man, who weighs 60 kg, is shot out of a cannon that is elevated 40° from the horizontal. The “cannon” is actually a 0.91-m diameter tube that uses a stiff spring and a puff of smoke rather than an explosive to launch the man. The manual for the cannon states that the spring constant is 1,822 N/m. The spring is compressed by a motor until its free end is level with the bottom of the cannon tube, which is 1.5 m above the ground. A small seat is attached to the free end of the spring for the man to sit on. When the spring is released, it extends 2.7 m up the tube. Neither the seat nor the chair touches the sides of the 3.7-m long tube, such that friction can be neglected. After a drum roll, the spring is released and the man will fly through the air. You have a 0.91-m thick airbag waiting for the man to land on. You need to determine if the airbag is thick enough to stop the man safely – that is, so he is slowed to a stop by the time he reaches ground level

Am I the only person that finds it odd that someone would make an ARCH bridge where the arch is made out of steel?

The arch in an arch bridge is always under compression, and steel is not that great under compression. I think a small layer of steel reinforced concrete under the steel arches would have made that bridge last forever. There are stone arches that were built over 1000 years ago still standing, but thats because stone and concrete are great under compression. Steel arches are pretty much worthless and give you a false sense of security.

Anyone else feel this way?
