Rita, the captain of a ship at sea, spots two lighthouses that she knows are 3 miles apart along a straight seashore. She determines that the angles between the two line-of-sight observations of the lighthouses and the line from the ship directly to shore are 15 degrees and 20 degrees.

How far is the ship from shore?

Hi ALL.

I came across a terrific quotation the other day, from the Carl Sagan book 'Billions and Billions' -

"The first day or so we all pointed to our countries. The third or fourth day we were pointing to our continents. By the fifth day, we were aware of only one Earth."

--Astronaut Sultan bin Salman Al-Saud

What's your favourite space/astronomy/science quotation?

Regards.
Conor

the radius of the earth's orbit around the sun(assumed to be circular) is 1.50 x 10 power of 8km, and the earth travels around this orbit in 365 days.

a)what is the magnitude of the orbital velocity of the earth, in m/s?

b)what is the radial acceleration of the earth toward the sun, in m/spower of 2?

c)repeats part (a) and (b) for the motion of the planet Mercury (orbit radius = 5.79 x 10 power of 7km, orbital period = 88 days?

Maybe dark energy is simply the accumulated memories of the times when stars passed through, echoes of gravity through time. Dark energy would be the lingering effect of stars gravitational influences. Stars would be dimensionally shut out from this past, but could bounce perfectly off of it like a wall. This would mean that dark energy is locked in the past, unattainable. This bouncng would explain the anti-gravity effect. Also, because more dark matter would be created as time wore on, it's effects would incease in power...that would explain the increasing acceleration of the universe...

... and extrapolate on the current state of the universe in such a short time bracket, to conclude that essentially all things originated from this initial cosmic explosion?

An explosion that was nothing short of chaotic which led to a series of fine tuned events by which we (the direct outcome of this chaotic explosion) can calculate backwards attempting to explain that such an infinite universe started off from essentially nothing.

Why is it so proper to consider this scientific model?
