So we have to boil the water we drink?

When the bio-filters, chlorination systems and/or fluorescent lighting, which either filters or kills the bacteria in the water are not working, you are obviously more susceptible to bacterial infections from the water. Boiling the water for a minimum of three minutes, before consuming will kill any bacteria that may be in the water.

My mother lives in NJ also, but thankfully has not had to do this. I was told that that was a quite a storm though.

If there's been a power outage then the filters and pumps may not be working and the water entering the drinking supply may be contaminated. Depending on the level of contamination it may be that water can be made safe by boiling it.

It would be advisable to check local news reports or contact local agencies to see what the current advice is.
