We use TLC in the lab to routinely determine a compounds purity. You spot your reaction mixture on the TLC plate and elute it. If there is more than one component in the mixture you will see more than one spot. The compounds separate on the SiO2 that is adhered to the plate based on the polarity of the compound being eluted and the polarity of the eluting solvent. Each component in the mixture will interact differently on the TLC plate and will therefore have different Rf values. Hope this helps.
