Hi. For those of you that are mathematicians or grad students in math, what's the hardest concept or area of study EVER in the entire history of math that you've encountered or heard of?

Can you explain in simple terms what made it so difficult?

This is a serious question. On June 22 2007 and June 30 2007 my neighbor and I on the first occasion and both of us and her family on the second saw a very strange object in the sky. Both times it was between 10:30 and 11:30 pm near Flint, MI. I don't know how to describe it but to say it looked like an oval shaped object with a flat bottom (think of the mirrored candle holders that sit upright with a candle in front of them) flying at a high rate of speed and it looked like it was on fire. At first, we thought it was maybe an airplane on fire, but it kept going until it seemed to have disapeared, but could have gone behind clouds that we wern't able to see that late at night. We both questioned our sanity lol. Then last night we saw it again. I've never seen a weather balloon, so am wondering if this could possibly be one? Is there places to check to see if they were testing near here?

I am seriously considering building a fallout shelter below ground out from my home. Even though I live in florida, I am on a bluff (small hill) and have done test digging and have not hit the water line until about 10 feet deep!

I am considering using concrete blocks, then filling them with concrete. I plan to make the inside dimensions

8 ft. wide, 10 ft. deep and 6 ft. high

I will build a staircase down towards its door
and have a cellar door over the stair well as well.

I also plan on putting 2 feet of dirt on top of the 1ft. thick block ceiling (filled iwth cement)

I would like to be able to have another underground area that is built much thinner for food and wate rstorage, because keeping the dust particles out of food and wate ris all that matters, not the fact that the gamma rays can go through it.

Anyway any idea on how much concrete blocks and concrete will cost not to mention getting a back ho to dig that hole?

Thanks!

hey guys~ i am having trouble with a physics problem.

An ion's position vector is initially r = 8.0 i - 5.0 j, and 8.0 s later it is r = 5.0 i + 3.0 j, all in meters. What was its vavg during the 8.0 s?

I calculated the change in velocity and got the answer for j, but not for i. I don't understand why I can't get i right.

any suggestions?
thank you!

It's well known that the Mayans were great at astronomy and math. That date does have scientific significance. On that day our sun will have completed a 25,800 year voyage around the Milky Way Galaxy. But here's where it gets interesting, the sun will also be in alignment with the equator Milky Way. It will pass from the southern hemisphere, to the equator, finally; to the northern hemi. On a small scale, (I know this is a weak argument), toilets flush in different directions depending on which hemisphere you are on. Does anyone think there is anything to this. Could our magnetic field or anything important like that reverse itself? Could our sun by negatively affected? I would like to know what theories about this event are out there. No offense, but please make responses closer to scientific thinking than religious thinking. I think all toilets will cease to flush! Happy New Galaxy! :)
