Quicksand occurs when a layer of water seeps under a layer of sand, usually along the shore of a creek . The sand is strong enough to support some weight, but a heavy vibration or a sudden jar will destabalize the system and the sand will fluidize. Anything heavy will sink. Anything that is light will sink up to a depth according to the laws of buoyancy. This includes you. Because the sand / water mixture has a bulk density higher whan water- alone, your chances of sinking deeper than your waist are pretty slim unless you have bricks in your pockets. You can be trapped in the sand mixture, but you cannot sink regardless of what the Jungle Jim movies show. To get free, lay down flat and swim or wiggle out.
To portray a quicksand scene the directors employed a hydraulic of other type of lift under a tank of water. The water would be covered with sawdust or sometimes breakfast cereal. The actor would be weighted so he would sink and down he would go on the little elevator. He would just bend his knees for part of it while he thrashed around and hollered to convince the audience that he was being sucked down to his death. One of the very best quicksand scenes was in the old American movie, "Swamp Water" made in the 1940's starring Dana Andrews and Walter Brenner.
