It's well known that the Mayans were great at astronomy and math. That date does have scientific significance. On that day our sun will have completed a 25,800 year voyage around the Milky Way Galaxy. But here's where it gets interesting, the sun will also be in alignment with the equator Milky Way. It will pass from the southern hemisphere, to the equator, finally; to the northern hemi. On a small scale, (I know this is a weak argument), toilets flush in different directions depending on which hemisphere you are on. Does anyone think there is anything to this. Could our magnetic field or anything important like that reverse itself? Could our sun by negatively affected? I would like to know what theories about this event are out there. No offense, but please make responses closer to scientific thinking than religious thinking. I think all toilets will cease to flush! Happy New Galaxy! :)

George M:Yes, the toilet thing is proven.

I think the Mayans really did know something big. Maybe there is something they had seen that we have truelly missed.

Nothing will happen. There is nothing magical about an artificial line on a map. Just like stepping on a crack doesn't break your momma's back, the world will keep on spinning. The same way.

The moon crosses the Earth's equator monthly with no ill effects. The various planets cross the Sun's equatorial plane with no problem. Each year, the earth completes an orbit of the sun and crosses the plane of the ecliptic without incident. The laws of physics hold on both sides and even on the line.

People drive from New Jersey and cross into New York regularly without too much trouble, too. Again, this line is pretty much arbitrary and not by itself meaningful.

Also, BTW, the toilet flushing thing is an urban legend. It is theoretically so, but local factors (such as bowl design) massively overcome any coriolis forces that may come into play.

There is no "event" to have a theory of.

The sun takes 230 million years to circle the galaxy, not a meagre 25,800.

The Sun is not about to cross the midplane of the galaxy, something it does every 35 million years.

Given the Sun's age as 5 billion years, you can see that it has orbited the galaxy many times, and crossed the midplane many times and nothing has ever happened when it did.

Our magnetic feild has reversed itself before but it was about 780,000 years ago. Scientists don't really have any solid theories on why this happened. Possibly the gravitational effect of a comet passing by too closely or maybe a meteorite impact. But I've never heard any theories about our solar systems alignment with the center of the galaxy causing any harmful effects.

If the Mayans were smart enough to come up with exact date that this alignment will take place, and they were. Then it makes sense that they are also right about the outcome.

magnetic fields can reverse themselves, this is a proven fact from past records.so is the magnetic fluctuations going on Right now.I have seen more than once a compass spin in circles.
