Here is a good tool to use to measure how far away a thunderstorm is.

Assume that seeing the lightning is instantaneous, as light travels very quickly.

The speed of sound in air is about 1 mile every 5 seconds. So count the seconds between seeing the lighning and hearing the thunder. Every 5 seconds is one mile.

Because light travels faster than sound, so even though the light and sound originate from the same point at the same time the light travels much faster (3x10^8 m/s) than the sound (~330m/s) and so you see the explosion before you hear it. It is much the same for thunder and lightning if you think about it!

depends how far away you are. speed of light is much faster than speed of sound so the light gets to your eyes before the sound gets to your ears. just like when you see lightning before you hear thunder.

The light and the sound are produced at the same time, but sound travels slower.
