FOIL method. (First Outside Inside Last)
First: 5x * 3x = 15x^2
Outside: 5x * -8 = -40x
Inside: -3 * 3x = -9x
Last: -3 * -8 = 24

15x^2 - 40x - 9x + 24
15x^2 -49x + 24

use the property of distribution:
(5x - 3) (3x - 8) =
3x(5x - 3) - 8(5x - 3) =
Applying it again,
5x*3x - 3*3x - (8*5x - 3*8) =
One more time to deal with the - sign:
5x*3x - 3*3x + (- 1)(8*5x - 3*8) =
5x*3x - 3*3x + (- 1)8*5x - (- 1)3*8 =
5x*3x - 3*3x - 8*5x + 3*8 =
(Note the similarity to the F.O.I.L rule)
doing the actual multiplications:
15x^2 - 9x - 40x + 24 =
Lastly, combine like terms:
15x^2 - 49x + 24

(5x)(3x) + (5x)(-8) + (-3)(3x) + (-3)(-8)

You just have to multiply the first term in the first parenthesis with the other two terms in the second parenthesis. Then you multiply the second term in the first parenthesis with the other two terms in the second parenthesis.
After doing that, you add all the resulting terms and you got your answer

multiply 5x by (3x - 8) and -3 by (3x - 8). remember that a negative value multiplied by a negative value makes a positive value.

= 15x^2 - 45 x - 9x + 27
= 15x^2 - 54 x + 27
