Newborn & Baby - January 2007

I have what my public health nurse calls "abundance," meaning that I produce way too much milk. I was told my supply would settle down after a couple of weeks, but it's been five weeks and nothing has changed. If I don't feed my daughter or express about five ounces of milk every two hours, they swell up and then gush milk - I literally get little jets of milk that soak through breast pads like nothing. I have to wear hand towels in my bra! Additionally, whenever I feed my daughter, I can hear her coughing and choking as she goes, because the milk comes out too fast for her to swallow it properly. This leads to multiple interruptions in feeding, and thus a very frustrated baby.

So, my question is this: I want to continue breastfeeding exclusively, but I can't deal with this anymore. Is there any way to decrease my milk supply to a manageable level, or am I just dreaming?

I am currently using Enfamil gentlease for my baby. I noticed they make the "same" formula in a store brand. I looked on the back of the label and noticed all the vitamins and such were the same. I am paranoid about other formulas besides enfamil. What is your opinon on the store brand?

to sleep on her own, like she's been doing for about 4 months. She's 8 months old now.
Yesterday at nap time, she just didn't want me to put her in her crib, so she skipped that nap, cause she wouldn't fall asleep in my arms.

Last night, I fed her, we did everything we always do, and when I went to put her in her crib, she started to cry. I went back, retrieved the pacifier that she threw across the room, checked her temperature and her diaper. Everything was fine.
So, I figured: "she's just not tired yet". I took her to the living room, and we played some more. A little after, she started to rub her eyes and yawn, so I figured "she has to be tired". I put her down. Crying started again! I knew nothing was wrong, she just seemed to want to be with me, but she'd fuss if I held her, she'd fuss if I put her on the floor to play...
Finally, I gave her more formula, and she went to sleep...

But why did she do all that? It's a drastic change in her behaviour...

Thanks!

I am breastfeeding and I just don't seem to have enough milk. My 2 month old is always still hungry after I feed her. I've tried feeding her more often, pumping more, and drinking more water. Nothing seems to work. Any ideas?

He'll be 4 months the 18th. Basically he eats two sets of 6 ounces at night. But lately during the day he'll barely eat. He'll go like 5 hours during the day without eating. I wish he'd do that at night. From like 10 am - 10 pm he'll probably eat 8 oz - maybe 10 oz. He used to have such a hardy appetite. Now I don't know when to feed him and how much. My husband suggested I feed him less during the day, so he'll eat more often, so at night I'll give him a big bottle and maybe he'll sleep through the night more. What do you think? Should I be worried about his lack of appetite? He weighs I'm guessing about 15 or 16 lbs.

our son is sleeping with us in same bed. and I don't really see necessary to put him alone in his room. don't you think baby need love and confort from parent? putting him alone in different room is sound mean and I heard lots of baby looking for comfort from branket or start sucking finger. using toy to put sleep is asking for babysitting. doesn't sound right....

I am 15 weks pregnant with my baby, and I am wondering what items you moms out there found super handy and worth the money when you had your baby- things you couldn't live without with your baby!! If you could give me brands of items, too, I would be grateful. I am planning on nursing and pumping/bottle feeding, things like pumps, bottles, etc... I am also thinking about using cloth diapers, if anyone used them let me know what it was like... What baby products (shampoo, wipes, diapers) did you use and why? What baby monitor did you like?
I am trying to get an idea of items we will need to purchase and put on our birth registry... which will probably be at WalMart. I am in Canada, so products would have to be available here! THANKS!!

I am about to adopt a baby in an independent adoption. I am by no means rich, even though I have a good job. I know infant formula is way expensive, so I was wondering if anyone knows if you can apply for WIC if the baby is adopted? I live in California.

My daughters doctor said it was okay for my daughter to sleep in her car seat when she has a cold. Are there any other alternatives that anyone knows of to keep her elevated when she is sleeping. I didn't know if they make something for that or not? I just get worried when she sleeps in her car seat even though she is probably safe in there. Any advice for sleeping when they have a cold would be great!

My friend and his girlfriend are going to have a child in a couple of months. I am going to give her a dozen of clothe diapers for a gift. She said that she was not going to use disposable diapers on her offspring. So I took that as the idea of what to get her. Indian cotton clothe diapers. But my question is, why is it only women are allowed at baby showers? I know most men would not even want to go, but most does not mean all. Is it because women talk a bunch of crap about us when we are not there and they will be in a a large pack. So who knows? But it's not like they don't do that anyways. So, why are men not allowed at baby showers?

*note* in case you haven't caught on, I am a male

My baby is 13 months old and I love him to peices, but I find his sleeping "schedule" to be the most challenging thing about parenting! It's not even that I am losing so much sleep, it's that he's totally playing me! We just recently got him to go in his crib and fall asleep all by himself and we felt so successful. Now he will wake up at 2 or 4 in the morning and refuse to go to sleep unless we are holding him. I try not to give in, so if I leave him in his crib he will cry and cry and cry. The second I pick him up he goes back to sleep and the second I put him down he wakes back up:( Oh, so frustrating!!!! He's darned cute though so it's hard to be mad:)

My mother-in-law visited us the other day and kissed our 9 mth old a bunch of times before telling us she has cold sore. I was shocked that she would kiss our son on the lips! I didn't notice until after she had done it (I wasn't the one who greeted them at the door). Anyways, needless to say I am angry. Was it a total lack of responsibility on her part? Should I be worried about what other things she could be irresponsible about? She seems a little clueless about these things sometimes.
