My doctor said it was ok to start earlier (4 months) because my son seemed to really be interested in what we were eating. He did caution starting one food at a time. We started with cereal mixed with breast milk for a week, then went to banannas for a week, then applesauce. Once we did that there were more options in cereal available because some of them had apples or banannas in them. Then we added a fruit and a vegetable each week until he had tried everything. It worked for us.

One other thing though, my pediatrician said not to give milk until my son was a year old because it didn't have enough nutrients and would fill his tummy when he needed the completeness of breast milk or formula, so if we were going to suppliment give formula. You might check and see what your peditrician says on that.

Breast milk and/or formula is all a baby needs nutritionally until about the age of 6 months. When your baby is ready for solids, she will be able to sit up, have good head control, and will have lost her natural tongue thrust reflex. The tongue thrust reflex is what helps your baby nurse from breast or bottle. While this reflex is still strong, the baby will push against a spoon or push it out whenever you put it in her mouth. Some mistake this for not liking the food, but it is because the baby is not ready to eat solids yet. Another good indicator that your baby is ready for solids is does she show interest when you are eating? Does she watch you put food in your mouth? Does she open her mouth when the food goes by? Does she try to reach for food and silverware? There is no need to rush introducing solids. Many babies begin to show the signs of readiness between 4-6 months, however some don't have much interest until 6-9 months or even older. First introduction of solids is generally infant rice cereal as it is easy to digest, has little risk of causing a reaction, and it is easy to mix very thinly at first then increase the consistency as your baby begins to develop her spoon feeding skills.

Normally it is 6 months old but it really depends on the baby. How often she is feeding and how much she is eating each time. If you feel the baby is always eating try introducing baby rice cereal in the morning and again in the early evening.

6 months for baby food. Rice cereal maybe a little earlier. And if by milk you mean cow's milk, you should not give that to her until 12 months unless she is tested to start it earlier.

Was advised by doctor: Try at 6 months. Don't do it now as it's more likely to cause allergies..
