Can anyone give me a rough breakdown of the number of people in each branch of the service?

In the same vein, out of those numbers, does anyone have a rough breakdoon of of people in the combat arms, as opposed to rear echelon?

I was in Viet Nam, and am aware that only approximately 5% of those in country were in the bush, on the front lines. Is the same ratio still true? Or is Iraq different because even the rear echelon seems to be more at risk?

Thanks for your response.

we see iraq: the violence is very bad, dozens die each day there. Afghanistan is becoming more violent, now bush is aiming the big gun at iran, do you think dubya will reinstate the draft in his last 2 years to combat the increasing violence, since the voulnteer army is stressed by the increased troop deployment. i hope it stays as a volunteer army, though that would be harder as many push for more troops in Iraq. I AM NOT wanting backlash, just opinions

I dont think so as all countries have the right to defend itself. What if some day america decided to attack a non nuclear country ? Can the americans be trusted? NEVER . The only way to be safe from american invasion is by having nuclear weapons.

Should Saddam Hussan have been removed from power? I realize that there are many tyrants in the world that comit attrocities to the people that they rule over, so then why did we choose Iraq? There were no WMD's. Our reason for envasion is no longer valid. Rumor has it that we are spending $325M/day for this war. What is the validation for it?

Someone asked (joking I assume) why we don't send Chuck Norris to Iraq, and people actually responded thinking he would do better than our military!

Do people really think that a fictional character like "Walker, Texas Ranger" would stand a chance against trained killers?

Even when Chuck Norris was the "World" Karate Champion ages ago, do you think that's the same skills needed at all to survive being deployed in a war zone?

Seriously, do you people think Movies are real?

For those of you are saying to pull out of iraq and have no clue what you are talking about you should read this, this will give you a good idea that even if we pull out of iraq we are still going to be fighting other wars. So get over it, we need to fight for our freedoms and you sure as hell dont do that by sitting around and hoping that you have freedom

Click bang bang, all sorted. You'd never know they'd been there.

Perhaps they should have done the same with Saddam Hussein as well rather than bother with the war in Iraq. Could have removed the bastard quickly and simply without any need for ful scale conflict

I would be interested in instant messaging with some of US Soldiers. But, I would like to talk about their perspective of things. I'm tired of news stories...I want to talk directly. I think there is alot we don't hear.
