There are plenty of pro and cons of joining the Army. I am a green beret that just returned from Iraq for the second time and am now getting out of the Army. I joined the Army at the age of 17 and have been in for 8 1/2 years. I am very happy that I joined the Army and have very few regrets with it. I would say if you want to join the Army, make sure you know the reason you are joining for. I joined because I wanted the challenges but found that there are plenty more things that the army offers. PRO's: 1. Job security. 2. Health and dental. 3. Job advancement. 4. Experience. 5. Travel. There are plenty more pro but these are the ones that come to mind when I think about it. CON's: 1. Family. 2. Money. 3. Unwanted danger. There are alos plenty more con's but these are the ones I think of right away. I would recommend that if you are going to join the Army, make sure you have a college degree first and then join the Army as an officer. I am getting out of the army because I want to go to school full time. Yes you can go to school while you are on active duty but you can't be a full time student at the same time. The other reason and most important reason for me getting out is that I got married. I really don't think anything is harder on a relationship than military life. If you are single then the military is the best. If you are married I wouldn't even ponder the thought.

If you are sincere then you will read my response.
The good is that you have room and food for almost nothing except your obedience to superiors. You can take the opportunity to improve your education and visit places that you cannot do so due to financial constraints. Before joining decide what piques your interest and prepare mentally to include formal and informal education and get in shape physically.
Get a copy of Army Regulations and the U.C.M.J.
Be All You Can Be
Now for the dark side.
Staff Sergeant Stuart A Gerlisky was a VietNam veteran that had almost 20 years and was preparing to retire. He had an accident were he was physically hurt. The US Army which is in reality has becomed an uncontrolled for profit business fought him at every level along with the Veterans Administration and won.
What was the issue ?
They did not want him to receive any medical health care because it costs a lot of money. His lower back was injured severely it did not allow him to continue to do his job in a professional manner: He was a Recruiter.
Sadly his son Chris wrote that SSG Gerlisky had died an angry and resentful with the US Army and the VA. He served with honour and opened opportunites that other recruiters did not. Other recruiters exploited young people and twisted facts but SSG Gerlisky was the opposite because he loved The United States of America and the US Constitution. The motto of the US Army: "This We'll Defend", Recruiters and Drill Sergeants have it on their patches.
The others are that you have limited freedom of speech and have to follow to military rules and regulations: Army Regulations, Army Regs, and the Uniform of Militray Justice,U.C.M.J.
Planning what you decide for YOUR future will go will be criticial.

I really, really, really, REALLY!! think that you SHOULDN'T join the army. My friend, last summer, lost her dad from him being in the army. She was sooooooooo upset and stressed, and I felt so bad sitting there watching her cry knowing her dad wasn't coming back. You shouldn't put your son in that position. You're young, and probly beautiful, and you have your whole life ahead of you. But, if you join the army, you have to worry about not having your whole life ahead of you. If you don't join, there are always safer jobs that you could take interest in. You just have to find what categories suits you best. There are some good paying jobs out there. Just please don't join!!! I do though, respect that you are considering your options, and i do understand that you are tied up in a perdictament, but you don't want to be another add on to a graveyard. You can do what you wanna but i say no.

Like every " job" there are good and bad points, military one,s have always the chance of you being killed or injured. The other side is adventure, travel and if you join at an early age a full pension after you have served 22 years, you would only be about 40 years old by then or even less. So at a very young age you would have a pension to do what you would like with. Marrage can cause problems, military life and marrage not a good mix. But go for it if you think it,s for you. And Good Luck.

Good: Serve your country.
Do your parents and the nation proud.
Opportunity to become a national hero for heroic acts.
Fairly good pay and danger money when in action.
Excellent pension when you retire.
Bad: You could die.
You could be shot and crippled for life.
You have to sign a contract to serve for a certain number of years: if you don't like it, it's tough!
You may have to follow orders you don't agree with.
You may be forced to kill another human being.
If its the British Army, you have to watch your back: you could be shot by the Americans as well as the enemy.
Hope that helps!
