I was arrested in march of 06 for battery involving bodily injury against my daughter. she is 14. going on 24. i am a police officer who is not in the popular clique at the police station. the chief reported on the local news and in the newspaper that i "beat" my daughter. the chief said at the time to my wife, with my mother present, that if she(my wife) had slapped her daughter, he would not have arrested her but that he could not have his officers acting this way. the incident happened on the front porch of my home, i was not on duty, not in uniform, a neighbor heard the yelling and saw me swing my arm back right before i slapped her. i never hit her face because she was using her hands to shield her head, i hit her hands with an open palm. when the police showed up(close to a dozen of them), they failed to ask her brother, my older son about the incident even though he had witnessed the entire thing. also, i never intended to slap her, just sit her down on the porch.

SWAT Overkill: The Danger of a Paramilitary Police Force

I think the fact our police departments in America are becoming too militarized in ridiculous fashions.

It’s the difference between Audie Murphy and Andy Griffith. But nowadays, police are looking, and acting, more like soldiers than cops, with bad consequences. And those who suffer the consequences are usually innocent civilians. The trend toward militarizing police began in the ’60s and ’70s when standoffs with the Black Panthers, the Symbionese Liberation Army, and the University of Texas bell tower gunman Charles Whitman convinced many police departments that they needed more than .38 specials to deal with unusual, high-intensity threats.

I received 2 e-mails from 2 different people who I know about that if you're robbed at a bank machine. Basicly it said, if you enter your PIN backwards, the machine reconizes it and the police get dispatched. The robber will still get the money but the police will be on their way. Is this true?

How much difference does having a paid Attorney represent you in a criminal case versus a court appointed lawyer? Is it because a public defender has such a big caseload that he/she can't focus on one particular case too much? Is it true that public defenders are pretty much inexperienced and get paid a set amount per case no matter what the outcome is? If two people are charged with the same crime, is it possible that the one who shelled out ten grand for an attorney may walk while the one (who didn't have rich parents)may do time in prison?

Hi, my gf commited a felony about 10 years ago, she is still on probation here in Arizona and has to keep on making payments. The last few times she has tried to pay, besides the fact they already gave her unsupervised probation they cant seem to find her case on file. She has stopped making payments the last couple of months. Is she in danger of maybe having a warrant, or will the case just fade away somehow? Thank ou.

On police shows like Law and Order, the officers often access financial records of suspects (no talk of getting a warrant), or track credit card use to track down a possible suspect. Is that really what happens? Same with "pulling the luds" to see where phone calls were made.

Would there be any value in attempting to help them or make counseling available to people who fit the profile of serial killers, serial rapists, serial child abusers, before they ply their trade for the first time? Would such a person seek or accept help? Could lives be saved? Am I being overly optimistic?

It's not that I think we are being too hard on them. Personally, I don't care if they rot in hell.

It's just that if we wait until they've killed 3 or more people before we begin to profile, identify, pursue, prosecute, or find other ways to stop them., are we not doing society a disservice?

A couple of months ago my husband and I dropped off his daughter at her house. As soon as we were leaving the premises where she lives (job corp housing), we were approached by about 7 sheriffs, guns pointed at us, both my husband and I were handcuffed and my mom and my newborn were in the car with us. They say it was an anonymous report but we know if was my husband's ex and her boyfriend who made it. They said that the previous Friday that we picked up his daughter, that my husband had a gun and point it at them. They didn't find nothing that Sunday that they searched the car (because he never had nothing on him) and they still arrested him and took him in, handcuffed me and to my belief put both my mother and newborn in danger. I understand it's their job and respect that, but if they never found nothing on him then why did they arrest him and why does he know have to go to court in a couple of weeks and get a lawyer to get this straight? Can we put charges on her?

What was it like. I don't mean to be insensitive but I know someone who is going there for a serious crime with fairly long sentence, and need to have some insight so I know how to deal with the situation. Any insight would be helpful, either form inmates or visitors or family, ect. Much apreciated.

About a month ago I was coming home and got into an accident hitting a light post. I was still able to drive my vehicle home and nobody was hurt. When I got home, my friends and I began to drink heavily. An hour or so passed and a cop showed up at my place because someone had called in the accident. The cop took me downtown and gave me a breathilizer. I blew .23, so obviously i was over the limit, but I wasnt driving, i was in my home. The cop arrested me for drunk driving and i went to jail. I was released without being charged, but i just found out today, almost a month later, that I have been charged. I am in the processes of finding a lawyer, but can they really charge me when I wast caught driving? I dont thinlk this case will hold up, what do u think? I honestly beleive that I was under the limit when i was infact driving, and how can they charge me with my BAC when I was obviouosly drinking alot at home? does anyone have an opinion?
