Immigration - December 2006

On BBC2 Newsnight programme they have just asked this same question. Some Immigrants said they were entitled under Human Rights to demand a translater and we the tax payers should foot the bill. Others had been here 25 years and have no intention of learning English our Culture or Traditions. So on top of the illegal Immigrants and other monies that are needed to keep these people here how much is it really costing us. Just for the Health Service they were talking something like £400 million......A Council paid £20,000 per print for one page in it's newsletter to be translated....... the mind boggles is it any wonder the country has no money for the real things like Police, Hospitals, Schools, etc.

A friend of mine has traveled back and forth between Mexico and the US in order to help take care of her family. Two weeks ago she was detained by US immigration authorities and told that she is crossing the border too much. They took her passport and said that she may not have it back or get a new one for five years. She is stuck now in Juarez. Is there any way to help her get back to her family in the US?

I just got home and I heard about the crackdown today, and they played a blurb of a teenager who was distraught about her father on the verge to get deported"saying there gonna break up families",I think its terrible that they used identity theft to gain a reputable job here with no regaurd to the persons identity stolen,or in taking responsibilities for the regaurds of their families that they have jeopardized by taking the chance....whats your take on this

Supposedly, we're in Iraq and ultimately it'll make a safer U.S. so why dont we help make mexico better so that all these immigrants won't have to keep sneaking in. Everyone deserves a chance at a great life..but the more illegal immigrants we have will make it harder for citizens.
I dont think we should just throw them back..becuause a lot of us would try to get out too, if we were in their position.

Is the US currently doing anything about helping out mexicans in their own country?

I just heard a report that the Grinch illegally entered the USA and is planning on stealing Christmas this year, along with a ton of money and resources of our citizens. He crossed from mexico early last year with many helpers. He plans to marry a legal American Grinchette and this disturbs me...so if our government wont stop the Grinch from stealing xmas and from our country, what can we do to stop him?

There are 11 million + illegal immigrants, and 375 million Americans. If you remove just one criminal, you are a patriot.

Everywhere I go it's Happy Holidays and Seasons Greeting..What about Merry Christmas. Why do people take Christ out of Christmas? And don't you dare say it's because of our "multiculturalism" That, to me, is 100% bull$hit! Other countries are proud of their heritage, they do not bend down for the minorities and change their traditions. Why do we feel the need to change our traditions to appease the minorities who we have graciously taken in. Is taking them in not enough?? Then they demand we change our traditions to make them happy. This has gone on for too long. If a person comes to this country they should RESPECT out traditions, not try to CHANGE them. I'm sick of it and in protest I am hanging a HUGE sign that says MERRY CHRISTMAS or KEEP CHRIST IN CHRISTMAS! on my lawn. I would urge others to do the same. Hope you all have a MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!

Hi Folks,

I have dual citizenship with the US/Canada. I was born in the US and have always used my US passport for travel around Europe.

I just found out I could also legally obtain and use a Canadian passport as well.

Question - is there any obvious benefit of using my Canadian passport (beyond political reasons or US image issues) for travel? Along the lines of Canada being a former British colony, being classified as a "Commonwealth Citizen" etc. ?

I don't even think the Canadian passport will expedite me when entering the UK since it's grouped by EU passports now and not Commonwealth passports.

Any info or insight would be much appreciated. Thanks,

This is the end result of an investigation into allegations of identity theft. The meat packing plants are in 6 different states. The relatives of some of the illegals in custody are protesting outside the facilities; saying that it is unfair that the arrests were made right before Christmas. Do you think it is unfair?
