I got my greencard 4.5 years ago and I am completing the 5 Year requirement in 6 months in order to be able to apply for the citizenship.And I know I have to be in US during that period
I am told that the procedure takes 9 months to get the citizenship.My question is Do I have to be in US during the application?Thanks

Yes! Because you have to be in the us when you go in for questioning. They don't give you a back up date if you can't make the date they set for you. You also have to be in the United States to be sworn in for questioning. The process takes any time from weeks to years. Depending how many other people in your state are applying for citizenship.

Residence and Physical Presence

An applicant is eligible to file if, immediately preceding the filing of the application, he or she:

has been lawfully admitted for permanent residence (see preceding section);
has resided continuously as a lawful permanent resident in the U.S. for at least 5 years prior to filing with no single absence from the United States of more than one year;
has been physically present in the United States for at least 30 months out of the previous five years (absences of more than six months but less than one year shall disrupt the applicant's continuity of residence unless the applicant can establish that he or she did not abandon his or her residence during such period)
has resided within a state or district for at least three months

No, you don't. Just be somewhere where you can receive notice that you are approved. Make sure you are not illegal in the US when you expect the notice. If you are illegal your request will be denied. Remember to report your address to where you are living to immigration, so they can find you.
