Hi Folks,

I have dual citizenship with the US/Canada. I was born in the US and have always used my US passport for travel around Europe.

I just found out I could also legally obtain and use a Canadian passport as well.

Question - is there any obvious benefit of using my Canadian passport (beyond political reasons or US image issues) for travel? Along the lines of Canada being a former British colony, being classified as a "Commonwealth Citizen" etc. ?

I don't even think the Canadian passport will expedite me when entering the UK since it's grouped by EU passports now and not Commonwealth passports.

Any info or insight would be much appreciated. Thanks,

If you're traveling to some places like Iran, it's much better because you're identified as a Canadian Citizen, not a US one. In places hostile to the US, you cold probalby travel unharassed.

However, beyond that, the nation you come from doesn't' make much difference.

There is a reason why you have a DUAL Citizenship. If you where asked to renounce your nationality I can see why it would be an issue. Being a person with dual citizenship (US & Canada) does not take away your rights to travel with both passports, that's why you have a dual citizenship and not a singular. I'm sure if you have put in the time in Canada you are entitled to your benefits because you earned it. If you did the same in the US, you also earned it. But if you want to live the dual citizenship at full force you need to be very careful, this can backfire once they start asking you for taxes. If you earn incentives in other countries including your country of birth you have to report those earnings to the country you live in. Not to worry IRS has it's ways to find out. It don't sound so dandy after all, uh?

I would use the Canadian. When I travel abroad I try to hide the fact that I am from the USA

It all depends where you want to go...if you are going to a country that doesn't have relationship with the US ie Cuba the use your Canadian. Other then that i don't think i makes much of a difference.

If I were the king of the USA, there would be no dual citizenship.. period. If you're a naturalized US citizen, you should have forsaken any allegiance to any foreign power and you'd have to sign a legal document attesting to same. The way it used to be.
